They did, so Brazil took full advantage of it. The 1970 team style used a lot of ball control, counterattack and not some frenetic attacking style. Italy had to run a lot after the ball that went from Gerson-Pele-Clodoaldo-Rivelino-Piazza-Tostão, so in the second half they had no chance to follow Jairzinho. And of course, it was hot and in a high city. Carlos Alberto famously said he run after the goal during the celebration because he was afraid to throw up in the field and couldnt even lift his arms.

4. 2002 (I watched it but didn't care at all)
5. 1994 (Sacchi boring fest)

1990 - I was too angry to watch it, it had to be ugly anyway
1998 - I was in the wrong place with the wrong people in terms of football (mostly clueless women), I'm not even sure I watched the game. A few comments convinced me to forget football and talk about embroidery probably.
2010, 2014, 2018 - I didnt watch them

Yeah, I often left the world cup with Italy, above all with age

It seems every likes football better when they were younger. Makes sense.

However, for one don't buy the notion that football is any more shit today than it was 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Some things are better and some are not. Not in terms of "X from 2002 would beat Y from 1970" but as in there are plenty enjoyable games these days. Not at world cups either.

The first round of the Brazil 2014 World Cup was amazing, as good as any group stage I can remember.

1. 2010 Netherlands - Spain
The football wasn't great but I'm Dutch so it has to be the most important match I ever watched. Very disappointing result.

2. 2018 France - Croatia
Nothing special but at least it had a lot of goals and while not being that great France deserved to win the cup that year.

3. 1998 France - Brazil
Very one-sided and being Dutch I think we would have given France a better match if we didn't blew the penalties vs Brazil.

4 2014 Germany - Argentina
Again, I really would have preferred a Germany - Netherlands final. Over the whole tournament Germany the right winner.

5. 2006 Italy - France
The Zidane headbutt was the biggest highlight and that says a lot. I also don't like it when finals are won on penalties.

While I followed the 1994 World Cup I didn't see the final because I was too young and only watched Netherlands games.
I also missed out on the 2002 World Cup because the Netherlands didn't qualify so I lost all interest in the whole tournament.

So, I saw live ten finals..The first ones I remeber better, I watched with the eyes of this age. I liked Argentina in 1986 especially, and the pragmatic squadra azzura in 1982. in 1978 I sustained Holland, but the hosts deserved the win. I put 1994 in the last place because I expected a spectacle and I saw a grey match, no goals.
