New York Ranger prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the bench at or near the end of Omsk's Kontinental Hockey League game and died a short time later, he was 19.

Omsk head coach, Wayne Fleming said Cherepanov collapsed on the bench during the third period of the game and did not see anything that happened on the ice that may have contributed to it.

Fleming also said medical authorities tried to get Cherepanov's heart beating again after it had stopped.

Sources in Russia tell TSN that the ambulance that is normally at all games had already departed and had to be called back.

It is not clear exactly how long it took for Cherepanov to be transported from the rink to the hospital but one source in the arena told TSN it was "probably 15 or 20 minutes."

Also, there is some question as to whether defibrillators at the arena were in good working order.

No further details are available at this point.

"He was a great kid," Cherepanov's agent, Jay Grossman told TSN. "He had a great smile and was an outstanding player with a great future on and off the ice. It's both shocking and devastating news for all of us. "

He had seven goals and 12 points in 14 games played this season in KHL.

Cherepanov helped lead Russia to a Bronze Medal at the World Junior Championships in 2008, scoring three goals and adding three assists with a plus-three rating over his six games at the tournament.

Cherepanov was drafted by the Rangers in the 1st round, 17th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

And this guys spend millions in buying players and can not even have a ambulance and a decent defibrillator...bastards.:rollani:

I hope measures will be taken but sadly he can not help Alexei now......

It's definitely tragic news and has it ever occured to you guys why the Rangers ended up drafting him back in 07? He was among the top five picks as far as I remember but teams kept on choosing other players, they must've known something even though the official news say they didn't.

Oh well.....

Russian investigators said Monday that Alexei Cherepanov, a New York Rangers prospect who died this fall, had been taking performance-enhancing drugs for months.

Cherepanov, 19, collapsed on Oct. 13 while on the bench for Russian club Avangard during a Continental Hockey League game. He died shortly afterwards.

In a statement, Russia's federal Investigative Committee said that the chemical analysis of Cherepanov's blood and urine samples led experts to conclude "that for several months Alexei Cherepanov engaged in blood doping."

The statement also said Cherepanov in his final year suffered from myocarditis, a condition where not enough blood gets to the heart, and that he should not have been playing professional hockey.

The statement went on to say that the Russian club's medical team might carry legal liability.

"I think it is more a tragedy for a young person and a family that he passed away," said Anders Hedberg, a scout for the New York Rangers, who drafted Cherepanov in the 2007 draft.

"If besides the inherited heart problem, if there was something … used and abused, it is unfortunate and it should not put a shadow over this tragedy," Hedberg said.

Prosecutors earlier this month accused the club's director of negligence. Mikhail Denisov has since been fired, but Monday's statement did not mention him by name.

Cherepanov, of Barnaul, Russia, was the Rangers' first-round choice (17th overall) in the 2007 NHL entry draft.

Is Avangard still allowed to have a hockey prof team?:err:
