With the departure of Jose Antonio Camacho; Benfica are now going through their 3rd manager of the season (Chalana).

The disappointment in Fernando Santos and huge relief Camacho gave the supporters didn't last long. Apart from entering early into the season with a set of newly bought players from his predecessor made life difficult for Camacho as Benfica just couldn't find their winning ways again.

Benfica legend Fernando Chalana is now the interim manager of the club until the end of the season, but he hasn't made much of an impresssion in the last 2 weeks, coupled with being knocked out by Getafe. However, in his defense, things have been a mess all season and I don't expect him to magically turn everything around.

So the questions are already rising on whether Chalana will remain or a new manager will be appointed during the Summer.

Abola completed a poll asking Benfica club members who they would prefer as their new manager.

54% said they want Jose Mourinho which is far from a long shot given his stature and history with the club

29% said they want former Portuguese NT manager and player Humberto Coelho

12% said they want current Portuguese NT manager Luiz Felipe Scolari as manager

We can also throw in the likes of Queiroz, Peseiro, Jorge Jesus, Bianchi and Cajuda.

What is the minimum coaching qualification needed to coach in Portugal? I've got UEFA B.

Should be one of Manuel Cajuda or Jorge Jesus, but it won't.

I wouldn't mind if his name was thrown in. I think he's a class manager despite this up and down season. The only question is if he could manage this style of play.

O_G, don't you think it's time you guys get a Portuguese manager from within our league? Get somebody who knows the league and has the passion to develop, while also understanding the magnitude of the club, as clearly these foreigners do not. Porto did it with Jesualdo and we've been fantastic. I think Cajuda or Jesus would work wonders with your club, particularly Cajuda who's an incredible motivator. Jesus' all out attacking style might get stomped on in Europe.

All this talk is totally irrelevant because the real problem in Benfica is not linked with lack of good players or good coaches. As long as you have that guy as your president, your downfall will never stop.

I would be very happy to see a management team of Rui Costa upstairs and Sven on the sidelines. He had flaws, but they are well outweighed by his coaching acumen.

If you stack up his resume against the Carlos Q, he wins in a landslide (Penguin has always noted that Carlos Q is better as a guy who runs a youth organization or assistant- not manager).

I think Sven would put together a team that would mix flowing/attacking football and victories.

Updated: May 7, 2008 Benfica keep mum over Eriksson meeting

Benfica are remaining coy on the possibility of Manchester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson returning to the club 16 years after his spell with the Portugal giants.

A delegation from Benfica including president Luis Felipe Vieira and captain Rui Costa, the club's future sporting director, were filmed by Portuguese broadcaster SIC in a hotel in Manchester where the former England boss had also reportedly been.

The club refused to confirm anybody from Benfica had met with Eriksson or offered him a contract.

Benfica spokesman Ricardo Maia said: 'We will not comment on any suggestions of a future Benfica coach now.

'Whether someone is or is not in Manchester to try to persuade Eriksson, we have nothing to say about it.'

Eriksson has been linked with Benfica since Antonio Camacho quit after declaring himself 'unable to motivate the squad'.

The former England manager's future at Eastlands has been the subject of much speculation, with owner Thaksin Shinawatra expected to relieve Eriksson of his duties at the end of the current campaign and Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari widely tipped as a successor.

Benfica risk missing out on a Champions League spot for next season after a disappointing season.

They are fourth in the SuperLiga, three points behind rivals Sporting Lisbon.

Manchester City are really stupid for letting him go.
I think that, much like Camacho, you will be proven wrong here O_G. I think Sven is an awful choice and doesn't have the characteristics needed to rejuvenate this club.
