We didn't make it into the real World Cup, but we have a chance to qualify for the Teenage version (FIFA World Youth U-20 Championship) to be held in the Netherlands, June 10 - July 2, 2005. In fact, we qualified for the last two championships.

The next one is in Canada in 2007.

Four teams will qualify from CONCACAF: two from each of the two groups in the final round in January.

The team is currently holding a training camp in Carson, California, to prepare for the final three-game round robin in Honduras.

The team is expected to meet two more times to prepare; early January in Central America, and late January in south Florida prior to travelling to Honduras.

Panama opened the scoring in the 24th minute before Canada's Will Johnson evened the score in the 41st minute. Canadian goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar saved a penalty in the 89th minute only to see the home team win the game in the 3rd minute of injury time.

The Canadians will play Ecuador on Thursday before flying to Florida where they will hold a four-day training camp from January 7-11.

January 6 result:

Canada 1-0 Ecuador

Canada's Men's Under-20 Team earned a 1-0 win over Ecuador in an international friendly played at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, late Thursday.

Tyler Rosenlund scored the game's only goal in the 41st minute. Vince Stewart played a great ball into Rosenlund who took on two players in the box and buried his shot high in the near corner.

"The boys were full value for this win," said Canadian head coach Dale Mitchell. "The only disappointing thing about tonight was that we didn't add to our goal with some of the chances we created. The victory should do our confidence some good heading in qualifying."

The Canadians will train in Ft. Lauderdale for the next four days before taking a one week break. They will return to Florida on January 17 for their final preparation before leaving for Honduras where they will begin CONCACAF Qualifying on January 26.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – Canada’s U20 National Team opened its CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over regional powerhouse Mexico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Mexico opened the scoring against the run of play in minute 17 but the Canadians stormed back to take the lead before the interval, courtesy of a first half brace from Calgary’s Ryan Gyaki.

Canada then stamped it’s authority on the tournament’s curtain-raiser by limiting the Mexican’s to long range shots throughout the second half. Mexico’s only real chance to equalize came late in the second half when a Mexican striker found himself in alone on goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar (Grimsby, ON) but the Canadian closed the gap quickly, forcing an errant lob.

Canada caused the tricolores fits along the flanks with Marcel De Jong (Toronto, ON) and Jaime Peters (Pickering, ON) outpacing their defenders on a regular basis. De Jong providing the cut-back for Gyaki’s first goal and it was Peters’ cross that sliced open the Mexican defence for the winner.

“I am very pleased with our performance this evening,” said Canadian Head Coach Dale Mitchell during his post-match press conference.

“Apart from the two goals, we could have grabbed a few more,” continued Mitchell. “I certainly think the result was a fair account of how well we played.”

“But, qualification is never decided after the first match. We still have to put together two more quality games against two talented teams to solidify a place in the Finals.”

Canada will now prepare for its second match of the tournament on January 28th against the host nation Honduras. Honduras opened its tournament with a 4-2 victory over Jamaica in the second match of the night. Canada will play Jamaica on January 30th.

In the other Group B encounter on Wednesday, two goals each by Cesar Guity and Ramon Nunez paced Honduras to a 4 - 2 win over Jamaica, who had Akeem Priestley and Obrion White scoring in the defeat.

The qualifiers from Group A are the USA and Panama. Also qualified for the World Youth Championship in the Netherlands are the host Dutch, South Korea, Japan, Syria, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

Ottawa, Ontario - Canada’s Youth (U20) Team today defeated Jamaica 1-0 in San Pedro Sula, Honduras with a goal by Ryan Gyaki in their final game of group B CONCACAF qualifying for the FIFA World Youth Championship Netherlands 2005.

Gyaki of Calgary has scored all four of Canada’s goals at the tournament.

Canada had already earned a spot in the FIFA World Youth Championship after defeating host Honduras 1-0 on Friday. Canada previously upset Mexico 2-1 on Wednesday.

Honduras and Mexico will play for the final CONCACAF spot for the World Youth Championship in the second game of the evening’s double header.

Panama and the United States earned the other two CONCACAF places to the FIFA World Youth Championship in Group A qualifying held earlier in January.

Canada Defeats Jamaica 1-0

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – Canada’s U20 National Team rounded off its CONCACAF U20 Qualifying Tournament with a well-deserved 1-0 win over Jamaica in San Pedro Sula on Sunday night. The Canadians, winners of their last four International games, surprised many in San Pedro Sula with their rock-solid defending and overall team approach to the tournament.

Canadian Head Coach, Dale Mitchell, made whole changes to his line-up for the encounter against the ReggaeBoyz.

Mitchell switched to a 4-4-2 with strikers Cam Wilson and Julian Uccello employed upfront and shifted Andrew Hainault into a holding midfield role. Replacing Hainault at the back was Brad Peetoom. Graham Ramalho was slotted in at left back and Mike D’Agostino was given the nod on the right side of midfield with Riley O’Neill sliding over to the opposite side. Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic also stepped in, replacing Josh Wagenaar.

And the young Canucks did exactly as they had done before.

The opening half was a midfield battle with very little in the way of chances for either side.

The Canadians seemed to frustrate the Jamaicans with their organization and resolute defending and by the end of the opening half, the Jamaicans were forced trying to beat Begovic from distance. The tactic never seemed to bother the Canadians and both teams left for the interval knotted at zero.

When the teams returned it was Canada that took over the match.

The first real chance fell to the feet of Julian Uccello.

Jaime Peters (who had come on at the half) stole an errant pass from a Jamaican defender and quickly played a diagonal ball toward the top of the area for Uccello. The striker took the shot early, forcing a kick save from the Jamaican goalkeeper. The rebound was eventually bundled back into the hands of the ‘keeper and the danger was averted.

But the game quickly turned again with the insertion of Ryan Gyaki and Will Johnson midway through the half.

The Jamaicans, now visibly tired, did not seem to have an answer for the pace of the two new strikers and in the 75th minute, Canada pounced.

Johnson won a crunching tackle in the middle of the field then broke away from his mark. When Johnson reached the corner of the area, he slipped a delicate ball to a streaking Gyaki who had sliced through the Jamaican box. Gyaki met the pass at the penalty spot and coolly side-footed his effort past a helpless Jamaican keeper.

The Jamaicans then threw everything they could at the Canadians but in the end couldn’t find a way to grab the equalizer.

The Canadians walked off to a standing ovation from the large Honduran crowd.

“I am incredibly satisfied with the way this team performed tonight,” said Canadian Head Coach Dale Mitchell following the match.

“To my knowledge no Canadian team has come into Central America and won all three of its games. It is truly a remarkable achievement but we must start to focus our attention on our preparation for Holland.”
