... in the lower leagues.

Will try to explain it as clear as possible :).

- - - - - - - - - -

From Segunda B (3rd level) --> Segunda (2)
There are four tiers who together form the Segunda B, the third level in the Spanish football pyramid. The Segunda exists out of only one tier.
From the Segunda four teams will relegate directly to Segunda B, so in total four teams will go up from Segunda B to Segunda.

How to promote?
1st eliminatory
The four Segunda B champions will meet each other in a playoff over two legs, home and away. The two winners will promote directly to Segunda, the losers will enter a new competition.

1st eliminatory (new)
All numbers two, three and four of the four Segunda B tiers will play eachother over two legs. The numbers two will face the numbers four and the numbers three will play eachother. The six losers are out of the competition, the six winners will go to the next round.

2nd eliminatory
The six winners are joined by the two losing champions, that makes eight teams. The best classified teams will always play the worst, except if they're from the same division. Again playoffs over two legs.

3rd eliminatory
The four teams left will play eachother again over two legs, and again the best will play the worst as long as they're not from the same division. The two winners go up to Segunda.

Current situation
After last week there are two matchdays to come. Basque teams are only playing Group 1, with exception of Osasuna B who play in Group 3, but they're of no importance anymore.

Group 1 - Basque group
Real Union de Irún has won Group 1 and are champions with two matches to come. Very well done! SD Lemona are still chasing for the fourth and last playoff ticket, they're just one point behind so have all still to play for. Bilbao Athletic and Barakaldo only theoretically still have chances. Standings:
1. Real Union 36 - 74
2. Cultural Leonesa 36 - 66
3. Ponferradina 36 - 59
4. Racing Ferrol 36 - 56
- - - - - - - - - -
5. SD Lemona 36 - 55
...
10. Bilbao Athletic 36 - 51
11. Barakaldo 36 - 50

Other Groups:
Group 2
Cartagena are five points ahead of Leganes, with Lorca and Ciudad Lorqui currently in third and fourth position.
Group 3
Villarreal B are three points ahead of Alcoyano with Sabadell and Sant Andreu far behind on place three and four.
Group 4
Cadiz won the title :)thumbsup:) while Real Jaen, Eijdo and Marbella are in second, third and fourth place.

Conclusion so far
So Real Union and Cadiz are certainly entering the playoffs for direct promotions against one of the two other champions or perhaps eachother.
As for the other Basque teams, hopefully Lemona makes it into the playoffs otherwise Real Union should be the only one participating. With Alaves and Eibar currently in the relegation places in Segunda, that would be very bad news...

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

From Tercera (4) --> Segunda B (3)
There are eighteen tiers who together form the Tercera division, the fourth level in the Spanish football pyramid. The Segunda B exists out of only four tiers.
From the Segunda B sixteen teams will relegate directly to Segunda B, these all are the last four teams of their tier. Two more teams will go down, these are all teams place 4th from bottom (16th position in a league of 20 teams) These will play eachother over two legs, the losers will go down too. That makes space for eighteen new teams in Segunda B.

How to promote?
1st eliminatory
The eighteen Tercera champions will face an other Tercera champion in one playoff over two legs. Nine winners will promote directly to Segunda B, nine losers enter the next phase.

1st eliminatory (new)
All numbers two, three and four of the eighteen Tercera groups will face eachother. The numbers two will play a number four, the numbers three eachother. This are 54 teams in total, the 27 losers are out of the competition, the 27 winners advance to the next round.

2nd eliminatory
The 27 winners are joined by the nine champions who lost their first playoff. This makes 36 teams. The will face eachother in a playoff over two legs, the best classified teams will play the worst as long as they're not from the same division.

3rd eliminatory
The eighteen teams left will play eachother in a playoff over two legs, the best classified teams will play the worst as long as they're not from the same division, the nine winners will promote to Segunda B together with the nine champions from the 1st eliminatory.

Current situation
There are eighteen Tercera groups, All teams from Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Araba are playing in Group 4, all Navarran teams in Group 15.

In Group 4 are three matches left to play with the following standings on top, only these teams still can finish top-4.
1. Amurrio 35 - 66
2. Portugalete 35 - 66
3. Elgoibar 35 - 66
4. Lagun Onak 35 - 64
- - - - - - - - - -
5. Beasain 35 - 61

In Group 15 the standings are as follows (total 40 matches);
1. Izarra 36 - 82
2. Peña Sport 36 - 79
3. Tudelano 36 - 69
4. Unión Mutilvera 37 - 67
- - - - - - - - - - -
5. San Juan 36 - 63
6. Iruña 36 - 60

Basque teams in trouble in Segunda B are only Real Sociedad B on a current 17th place which would mean direct relegation. Sestao River are just three points above safety right now.

Conclusion so far
Definitely eight Basque teams will enter the fight for promotion to Segunda B. Among them two champions who can secure promotion in only two matches. When teams finish 2nd, 3rd or 4th or loose the first playoff between champions, gaining promotion is very hard because in total 54 and including the champions one round later 36 teams fight for only 9 places.

that's a great write-up, thanks Knoert!

I'd just add that both Eibar and Alavés are in the relegation zone of Segunda División. Eibar's chances for staying up are very low, they only have 29 points which is 11 points below the line. Alavés won in Girona on saturday and they can still think of avoiding relegation with 35 points and 8 games left.

Otherwise good luck to all the basque clubs, I like the fact that the capacity of Lemoa stadium is almost twice as big as the town population (5000 vs 2800) :D

btw Bilbao Athletic won 5-1 at Lasesarre (Barakaldo stadium) in the previous round :)

Great post Knoert, It's all rather complicated but at least the champions have more of an advantage this time.

Hopefully Real Union and Portu will go up :thumbsup:

Yup things are looking very bad for both Alaves and Eibar, only a miracle can save them it seems...

Do you guys have any favourites in these leagues? Personally I've got a soft spot for Gernika but they messed it up already.
Portu should really deserve it as they're playing these playoffs almost every year but never really edge it, in their history they only played once in Segunda B (season 05/06 19th place) if I'm not mistaken.

I do like Portu, they're kinda the same level as Chippenham (a little higher perhaps) and after winning the league last season they deserve to go up.

As for Segunda B, I would be happy to see any of the Basque teams go up, but I do have a preference for the Bilbao based teams to do well (Lemona, Barakaldo, Sestao).

In Segunda B it seems like Lemona won't make it, with one game left the standings are...

4. Zamora 37 - 58
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
5. Celta B 37 - 57
6. Ferrol 37 - 56
7. Lemona 37 - 55

At the bottom things are still exciting for Sestao...

14. Sestao 37 - 45
15. Racing B 37 - 44
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
16. Sporting B 37 - 44 (playoff)

Programme (10-5)
Lemona - Pontevedra (11th)
Zamora - Depor B (17th, relegated)
Sestao - Celta B
Ferrol - Racing B

To remember; the number 16 will have to beat another number 16 to avoid relegation... Aupa Sestao!
Real Sociedad B are relegated... :(

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The standings in the Basque Tercera group, with still two matches to go...

1. Amurrio 36 - 69
2. Portugalete 36 - 69
3. Elgoibar 36 - 67
4. Lagun Onak 36 - 67
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
5. Beasain 36 - 64

In the Navarran group, with in total 40 matches to be played;

1. Izarra 37 - 85
2. Peña Sport 37 - 82
3. Tudelano 38 - 71
4. Unión Mutilvera 38 - 67
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
5. San Juan 37 - 66
6. Iruña 38 - 64

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Not less important, Alavés and Eibar's situation...

Still seven matches are going to be played, but things aren't looking good... standings at the bottom;

16. Las Palmas 35 - 41
17. Celta 35 - 41
18. Cordoba 35 - 40
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
19. Alavés 35 - 35
20. Alicante 35 - 41
21. Eibar 35 - 29
22. Sevilla Atlético 35 - 21

Still all to play for, but it will be very difficult, especially for Eibar, but as well for Alavés I fear... :nervous:

Sanse's relegation might not matter that much if they keep on with the idea of making the reserves league for next season... still not official.

That's new for me, a new reserve-division will be there next season?

That should mean more teams can promote if all reserve-teams will be taken out of the Segunda B, Tercera and lower, no?

In Segunda B they're finished!

Lemona got three points less than Zamora and finished 6th, so their season is over. Sporting B played a spectacular match versus Santiago which ended in 4-4, but that wasn't good enough for them because Sestao drew 0-0 at home versus Celta B, so Sestao are saved! :party:

Real Union are the only Basque team involving in the promotion matches for a place in Segunda B. They'll face either Cartagena, Alcoyano or Cadiz over two matches, if they loose they get another chance.
Matches to be played at May 17th and 24th, draw hasn't been made yet.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

In Tercera they're still playing.

Basque group 4
Amurrio drew 0-0 at home versus Arenas Getxo, but also Portugalete drew (away to Zamudio) while Lagun Onak has beaten Elgoibar. As Beasain did beat Alaves B, there's a very interesting ranking now. With one match to go...

1. Amurrio 37 - 70
2. Lagun Onak 37 - 70
3. Portugalete 37 - 70
4. Elgoibar 37 - 67
- - - - - - - - - -
5. Beasain 37 - 67
6. Baskonia 37 - 56

Their programme:
Cultural Durango (15) - Amurrio
Portugalete - Lagun Onak
Elgoibar - Zalla (12)
Beasain - Leoia (10)

With Portu and Lagun Onak facing each other perhaps Beasain have still chances... although I don't know what happens when teams finish on equal points.

As at the bottom, Alaves B and San Ignacio are relegated. For the last relegation place it's a battle between Zarautz, Oridizia and Eibar B, standings right now.

16. Eibar B 37 - 41
17. Ordizia 37 - 39
- - - - - - - - - -
18. Zarautz 37 - 39

Their programme:
Baskonia (6) - Eibar B
Arenas Getxo (13) - Ordizia
Zarautz - Santurtzi (11)

Navarran group 15
Also here just one match to come, Izarra, Peña Sport and Tudelano are qualified for the playoffs, Unión Mutilvera, San Juan and Iruña fight for the last spot.

Standings:
1. Izarra 39 - 89
2. Peña Sport 39 - 88
3. Tudelano 39 - 72
4. Unión Mutilvera 39 - 70
- - - - - - - - - -
5. San Juan 39 - 67
6. Iruña 39 - 67

Their programme;
Unión Mutilvera - Aluvion (12)
Oberena (14) - San Juan
Lourdes (10) - Iruña

At the bottom, Mendi and Lagunak are relegated, for the last two spots it's still very exciting.

Standings:
16. Idoya 39 - 42
17. Peña Azagresa 39 - 41
- - - - - - - - - -
18. Murchante 39 - 40
19. Ardoi 39 - 40
20. Lagunak 39 - 37
21. Mendi 39 - 23

Shame Erreala won't get promoted this season :moan:
They've to close an eight points gap with six matches to go, not impossible, but unlikely...

Alaves and Eibar are still in huge troubles btw, Alaves are five points behind safety, Eibar twelve... :thmbdown:

The worst possible happened...

Ida
17/05 - 19:00 - CARTAGENA - ALCOYANO
17/05 - 21:00 - CADIZ - REAL UNION

Vuelta
24/05 - REAL UNION - CADIZ
24/05 - ALCOYANO - CARTAGENA

So the Gipuzkoans will face Cadiz, can't see them make it, but anything can happen in football of course.

Alavés 1-1 Eibar which helps none of them..

Erreala 1-0 Albacete in minute 90 to keep some promotion hopes, although it's 8 points to promotion places and there are two other teams in the middle.

Osasuna is fighting against relegation vs Sevilla right now as well, 0-0 at halftime.

A quick update, Cadiz has beaten Real Union 1-0, on Sunday the return follows in Stadium Gal, everything is still possible!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Final standings in the Basque Tercera Group 4
1. Lagun Onak 38 - 73
2. Amurrio 38 - 73
3. Elgoibar 38 - 70
4. Portugalete 38 - 70

Very harsh for Beasain who finished on 70 points too...

As champions Lagun Onak will play the playoff over two matches for direct promotion, they've been drawn against Gimnastica de Torrelavega (Cantabria).

First match: 23/5 (Saturday), 19.00 Gimnastica - Lagun Onak
One week later the return in Azpeitia

Other three (over two matches, losers are out, winners advance to next round)
24/5 - 11.30 - Portugalete - Universidad de Oviedo (Asturias)
24/5 - 13.00 - Mensajero (Tenerife) - Amurrio
24/5 - 19.00 - Burgos (Castilla y Leon) - Elgoibar

Far trip for Amurrio, tough opponent for Elgoibar...

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Final standings in te Navarran Group 15
1. Izarra 40 - 92
2. Peña Sport 40 - 89
3. Tudelano 40 - 73
4. Union Mutilvera 40 - 73

Champion Izarra faces Palencia (Castilla y Leon), first match;
24/5 - 18.00 - Izarra - Palencia

Other three;
23/5 - 19.00 - Union Mutilvera - Sporting Mahonés (Menorca)
24/5 - 18.00 - Ourense (Galicia) - Tudelano
24/5 - 18.00 - Cerceda (Galicia) - Peña Sport

Very tough draw for all Navarran teams...

Real Union - Cadiz ended in a scoreless draw, 0-0.
This means Cadiz is going back to Segunda while Real Union continues their race for promotion together with Sabadell, Villarreal B, Alcorcón, Real Jaén, Lorca, Ponferradina and Alcoyano, who lost versus Cartagena.

Results from Basque Tercera teams;
For direct promotion:
- Gimnastica - Lagun Onak 1-0
- Izarra - Palencia 0-0
Returns next weekend.

For place in next playoff round:
- Unión Mutilvera - Sporting Mahones 0-0
- Portugalete - Universidad Oviedo 2-2
- Mensajero - Amurrio 1-1
- Ourense - Tudelano 4-0
- Cerceda - Peña Sport 1-0
- Burgos - Elgoibar 2-0
Returns next week.

So actually not a single Basque team won this weekend... :thmbdown:

Real Union have been drawn versus Sabadell, they've to beat them over two matches now to advance to the next round, first match on Sunday, return one week later.

All the matches;

Sabadell - Real Union
Alcorcon - Alcoyano
Villarreal B - Lorca
Ponferradina - Real Jaen

Real Union has beaten Sabadell, well done... the return will be next weekend.

All results
Sabadell - Real Union 0-1
Alcorcon - Alcoyano 1-0
Villarreal B - Lorca 1-0
Ponferradina - Rael Jaen 2-1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Lagun Onak has beaten Gimnastica at home 4-3, but that wasn't enough after their 1-0 loss one week ago, Gimnastica promotes to Segunda B on away goals... :(

Lagun Onak will start together with 35 other teams playoffs for promotion.

Results of other Basque teams in first round (in brackets overall score)
Elgoibar - Burgos 1-0 (1-2)
Peña Sport - Cerceda 3-1 (3-2)
Amurrio - Mensajero 3-0 (4-1)
Sporting Mahones - Union Mutilvera 1-0 (1-0)
Universidad Oviedo - Portugalete 4-1 (6-3)
Tudelano - Ourense 2-1 (2-5)

This means Peña Sport and Amurrio join Lagun Onak and advance to the 2nd playoff round.
Elgoibar, Union Mutilvera, Portugalete and Tudelano are out.

So we've got three teams still in the race, draw to follow.
