Preki Expected to Miss 3-4 Months

Preki Sustains Leg Injury in Exhibition Match

MLS All-Time Leading Scorer Undergoes Surgery For Fractured Fibula, Dislocated Ankle

KANSAS CITY, MO (February 21, 2004) – Kansas City Wizards midfielder Preki suffered a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle in his left leg during an exhibition match against the Columbus Crew in Tampa, Florida on Saturday morning. Preki left the game in the 15th minute and was taken to a nearby hospital. He underwent surgery Saturday afternoon and is expected to miss three to four months.

Preki suffered the injury in the 15th minute after trying to avoid a challenge from Columbus midfielder Ross Paule who was sliding in towards a ball at Preki’s feet. Preki jumped in the air to avoid a collision, but landed awkwardly on the ground and his left leg gave out causing him to tumble to the ground. He was carted from the field and taken to the hospital where x-rays revealed the dislocation and fracture.

Preki was named the 2003 MLS Honda Most Valuable Player after leading the League in scoring for the second time in his career. His 41 points on the season (12g, 17a) earned him his second Budweiser Scoring title (1997 & 2003) in addition to his second MLS MVP award (1997 & 2003). He also extended his MLS all-time leading scoring total to 264 points (77g, 110).

Good news is he doesnt Play for the Metrostars.;)
