GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP)— Diego Martinez' golden goal Thursday gave Mexico a win over Costa Rica and the regional Olympic qualifying tournament title.

The United States was eliminated earlier from any shot at the Athens Games when it fell to Honduras in a 4-3 penalty shootout.

Martinez scored 10 minutes into overtime to give Mexico a 1-0 victory. Both teams had qualified for the Olympics in games on Tuesday.

In the earlier game, Honduran goalkeeper Donis Escobar dove to his left to block a shot by Brad Davis after Eddie Gaven, Ed Johnson and Alecko Eskanderian had struck for the United States in a penalty shootout.

Roland Maradiaga, Sergio Mendoza, Mauricio Castro and Israel Solis all hit the net to give Honduras third place in the tournament.

In regulation time, Alecko Eskandarian scored for the United States at 50 minutes and Emil Martinez answered at 76.

The United States played without stars DaMarcus Beasley, Bobby Convey and Landon Donovan, who had gone to join the national team preparing for a game against the Netherlands.

Mexico beat the United States and Costa Rica topped Honduras in Tuesday's do-or-die Olympic qualifiers for the North and Central America and Caribbean region.

Costa Rica's well-organized defense on Thursday held the charging Mexican squad scoreless in regulation time. The Mexicans had shredded the U.S. defense in a 4-0 victory on Tuesday.

Anyway, congrats Mexico

yes, it was a blooper by the jamaican referee, anyway at least it happened during a not so important match, both teams were qualified already and both deserved it.
México and Costa Rica are going to play the olympics and that's all what really matters;)
