I saw one of these in the Italian forum and I thought it'd be fun to throw some ideas around here.

My team.....

-------------------------Robinson--------------------------

-------------------------Ferdinand-------------------------

---------------Terry-----------------Campbell--------------

Wright-Phillips--------------------------------------A.Cole

----------------Gerrard-------------Lampard-------------

----------------------------------------J.Cole-----------

-------------------Rooney-------------------------------

-------------------------Owen/Defoe--------------------

Personally although that'd never happen (Beckham will for sure stay in the team) I think it's about time we took advantage of having three of the best 10 centre backs in the world. Rio's mobile enough to cover for the wingbacks attacking too.

I already mentioned this in another thread that the England side is pretty set to play a 3 man backline with a 5 man midfield. I'd play the same team you have put forward but we all know that Sven will play something that will make you guys toss and turn. :D Good Luck ... you'll need it! :skull:

Based on how we played at Euro 2004 here's my predicted team

-----------------------Robinson----------------------

--------------Gerrard-------------Lampard-----------
Neville--------Ferdinand----------Campbell-------A Cole

Beckham--------------------------J Cole---------------
------------Rooney------------------------------------

-------------------------Owen-------------------------

[Rob's potential line-up under Sven]

^^^^ That's about right. Rooney would be a bit more forward. ;)

He hasn't seemed too happy with his recent NT performances and I don't think it pleases him that Becks plays out of position at Madrid so I hold a faint hope.

Let me erase those hopes for you right now. :skull: He will start and start as captain. The only way he is missing out is if he is injured and by that time it will be too late to start playing a 3-4-2-1 system under which your team can really excel as you have the right players for it.

England fans viewing the 2006 games: :drunk: + :wth: + :fero: +

That sums it up. You can thank Sven in advance. I hope he keeps his  :horny: under control. :D

The 2006 will be basically the team now. predicting the 2010 team now that would be interesting especially after seeing Ian Ridley's one for World Cup 98

I would go with a 4-3-3:

Robinson

Neville Rio Terry Bridge

Gerrard Parker Lampard

SWP Owen Rooney

I like the lineup you posted though Rob. I'd just want Gerrard and Lamps seperated and have Parker hold in midfield for them both to play their natural game of box to box. SWP and Rooney both like to drop off so it'd sort of be a five in midfield but they have enough pace to link up. I would see SWP making moves beyond Owen with his pace and Rooney making moves behind. And with Owen's great runs it should be pulling defences every which way, which everyone in that midfield can exploit with their passing ability or use the space to make a late run for a goal.

Obviously I wouldn't play it like Sven where the front 6 changed positions every five seconds leaving everyone not knowing what was going on.

Robinson

Neville - Ferdinand - Terry - A Cole

Wright-Phillips - Gerrard - Lampard - J Cole

Owen - Rooney

Yes, no Beckham. I can't see you lot winning the WC with Beckham as Captain. Joe Cole and SWP must start.

No Heskey? *stunned* Hes was immense against us the last time out.

don't forget after 70 minutes Heskey will come on for Rooney and make a back three with Gerrard and Lampard. :lala:

Naw, screw that. Sven'll bring a massive tall striker like Darius Vassel on then play long ball to him and Owen.

Oh and I kind of see the Parker thing. My idea is that Rio would be given the freedom to move up the pitch a bit if he wanted Lucio style. He's fast enough to get back and he has the distribution skills to keep the ball if he ends up there.

I've never seen Rio dribble like Lucio though, maybe we should take Paula Radcliffe, her dribbling seems pretty good.

sorry :D

I would keep the starting line up as it is although change the formation a bit.

-------------------Robinson------------------

Neville-------Rio------------Terry-----Cole---

-------------------Gerrard-------------------

--------Beckham----------------Lampard------

-----------------J. Cole---------------------

---------Rooney---------Owen-----------------

I'd love to see Sven have more faith in that system, he didn't seem to give a good enough try with it last season. Beckham has been playing well of late in that position whilst Lampard has being playing there all season to great efect. I'm reluctant to play Gerrard there as it isn't his natural position but he's still great defensively and can still pass the ball well from deep. PLus we don't exactly have our own Makelele, only Scott Parker who's not played at all this season.

J. Cole would be played in his natural position, and the two strikers pick themselves.

If we struggle to open up teams we can employ the width of SWP and Downing.

The thing with this formation is that it's extremely fluid, with the midfield three interchanging. J.Cole and Rooney given the licence to move where they see fit like pulling wide to offer width coming deep etc.

This obviously wouldn't happen though because we've been playing well with a regular 4-4-2. It probably wouldn't be wise to change formation so close to the WC.
