Hey all,

What i want to know is why Portugal struggle to develop world class strikers. You look everywhere else in europe and almost every country have at least 1 or 2. Don't get me wrong, Portugal have one of the best midfields in Europe but no STRIKERS.

spain - raul & morientes
italy - vieri
england - owen & shearer
france - Henry, trezeguet & Anelka
Germany - Bierhoff
Holland - Kluivert & host of others

i'm sure you catch my drift.

Actually I believe we have some decent strikers now with Nuno Gomes and Pauleta...but you're right in the past 10-12 years we haven't had any good ones. We used to have some very good ones in the 70's and mid 80's with the likes of Fernando Gomes, Manuel Fernandes, and Nene. I think the reason for the shift in the development of goal scorers besides talent lies in the training schools, where in Portugal the game of possession is very important. Also kids want to be the next Rui Costa, Figo, J.V. Pinto, and those guys are not strikers but playmakers.

I think you will be surprised in Euro with our Strikers...they are not Owen or Vieri, but they fight like madman, they can create play, and best of all they can score the sometimes difficult goal...I know that Nuno has done that practically all year at Benfica.

In my opinion our last great striker was Eusebio. I hope someone of the strikers will step forward and score those soarely needed goals in Euro 2000. I think its too early for Nuno but maybe JVP can finally realize his potential on the big scene..

Personally I don't think JVP will have much of an impact on Euro2000...he's had a terrible year. But I hope I eat my words.
I disagree with you ST on Nuno...I think now is the time for either him or Pauleta to step up. They are in their early to mid 20's. Owen is only 21 and he's already a master at scoring in the big scene. Either way I feel confident. I also think Sa Pinto might have an impact..he has been terrific in Spain. But this is just conjecture...I hope to see the real deal in about two weeks when hopefully Nuno scores two goals on England and Portugal wins 3-0.

I think that DOMINGOS PACIENCA should have been selected. I know he has had an iffy season and I harshly put him on my "flop" list, but he is an excellent example of a forward. If only he played more this season.

I think he should of been taken along to Euro 2000 as a wild card. Remember his form a few years ago just before Euro 96? He came on as a sub vs Croatia and scored. He has an excellent goals per caps ratio (I'm not sure exactly what it is) unlike JVP, Pauleta & co.

If we brought Domingos we might of stood a chance of going to the semis.

I'm not saying that portugal don't have a chance. All i'm saying is that if Jardel (by some miracle) had to qualify to play for portugal.

Portugal would be a more feared country to play against. Other countries face portugal & they know that portugal struggle to finish the chances they get.
