I just heard the game ended in a tie. Was it in Oporto? Either way, a tie is not a bad result. Jardel scored in 47th inute, but I don't know anything else. How did the game go? Does Porto look promising in the return match?

Porto played very well and outclassed Bayern.
Jardel could have scored other two goals, but he failed once and let Khan save afterwards.
Porto's goal was preceded of a beautiful play and precise cross to Jardel's head, who placed it _right just in the corner_! It seemd a computer made shot.
Bayern tied after the Germans played really fast after the ref called a fault, he was still talking to Paulinho Santos when they shot the ball to SSérgio who was all alone facing Hilário. Stupid goal... :(

I'll post UEFA's site review in a moment

Stalemate at Das Antas, but FC Bayern München will be much the happier with the result after Paulo Sergio's 81st minute strike from eight metres cancelled out Mario Jardel's header for FC Porto two minutes into the second half for, and gave the German side a vital away goal in advance of their Quarter-Final, second leg tie in Munich.

Porto fail to hold on
Following a nervy first half when scoring chances were kept to a minimum, Porto broke the deadlock with the first meaningful attack of the second period. Esquerdinha passed to Chainho inside the right side of the Bayern half, who released Ljubinko Drulovic along the Porto left, and the Yugoslav international fired a left-footed cross onto the head of Jardel, who beat Oliver Kahn at his right-hand post from eight metres.
The home side pressed for a second without reward, as Drulovic's corner was cleared by Markus Babbel as far as Aloísio, but the defender's shot from ten metres cannonned off Samuel Kuffour and fizzed narrowly wide of the Bayern goal with Kahn stranded. Then Drulovic crossed from the Porto right to Jardel who sneaked behind Patrik Andersson eight metres from goal, but this time Kahn was equal to the Brazilian marksman's effort.
Bayern offered little in attack, but salvaged an equaliser when Stefan Effenberg floated a quick free-kick past a static Porto defence for Paulo Sergio to calmly beat Hilário with a shot low to the 'keeper's right.

Defences dominate
Defences dominated the opening 45 minutes, but the home side had the majority of scoring chances. But despite having the majority of possession during the first quarter-hour, Porto almost conceded a goal when Effenberg turned inside the penalty area to hook Mehmet Scholl's low cross from the left goalwards, but the ball flashed past Hilário's goal.
Porto responded with their first clear-cut scoring effort in the 21st minute, but Scholl got his head in the way of Jorge Costa's stinging shot from Nelson's right-wing cross. Jens Jeremies then had a shot turned behind by Hilário for Bayern, before Jardel headed on a long clearance for Capucho on the half-hour, but the Porto midfielder failed to manage a shot on target from 10 metres. Drulovic then swung a cross from the left into the Bayern penalty area, but as Jardel challenged Kahn in the visitors' goalmouth, the ball dropped inside the five-metre box, but Porto had nobody available to knock the ball into the unguarded net as Andersson cleared the danger. Esquerdinha then fired a shot goalwards from 25 metres as the half drew to a close, but Kahn was well-placed to comfortably gather the ball.

Porto got a moral victory today...they had so many chances to score...imagine if they would have converted their chances...it would be 3-0 or 4-0 against BAYERN! WOW!

yeah..Porto gave Bayern a lesson...lets hope for a Porto win or a 2-2 tie in Munich.....Porto has really helped the Portuguese league this season...3 wins against German opposition and no defeats...thats got to boost Portugal's UEFA coefficient...next season if both Portuguese Teams do well we may see 3 portuguese clubs in the CL!

Trouble is the UEFA coefficient is a five year average. We need to keep having good years until poor seasons like 97/98 and 98/99 drop out. Also apart from Porto the other teams were poor in the UEFA. We've already lost a UEFA Cup place next season. Best outcome in the short term will be to get that back for 2001/02. If we ever get an extra CL place it won't be before 2005/06.

Because it is based on a five year average, the UEFA coefficient system is inherently resistant to changes re the places each country has. Something the big teams in Italy, Spain, Germany and England will benefit from. Is this a coincidence?

It's a 5 year rolling average.

this year it's:
1994/95, 95/96, 96/97, 97/98, 98/99.

Next year 99/00 will be added and 94/95 will drop out.
Each country's coefficient is the average of the 5 years.
ps, i'm 95% certain it's 5 years but may be 3.

Unfortunately, for the 2001/2002 season Portugal will only have one team in CL and that team will have to pre-qualify. Other than Porto, this season was awfull in UEFA competition. Let's hope Porto does overcome Bayern and all teams do better next year so we can get back the place we deserve.

I'm a Juventus fan, but my son follows Porto, so I watched with interest the result of Porto - Bayern Munich this week.

That late Bayern goal hurt a lot, and Bayern Munich will probably go through.

But two thoughts:

1.Porto fans should be proud - you've pushed one of last year's finalists to the maximum, and you just might go through. You've certainly silenced anyone who said that Porto didn't belong in the final eight ....

2. I should know better, but here's a prediction: in the second leg in Munich, Porto 1 Bayern Munich 1, then Bayern Munich wins in extra time.

But having said that, good luck ....
