Poland winger Karwan ruled out
WARSAW, May 16 (Reuters) - Poland winger Bartosz Karwan will not play at the World Cup finals after failing to recover from a calf injury picked up in a friendly against Romania last month.
Karwan, who plays on the right flank for Polish league champions Legia Warsaw, was unable to complete a set of sprints at the squad's training camp in Germany on Wednesday.
'It is better to take a worse player who is healthy than a better player who is not fully fit,' coach Jerzy Engel was quoted as saying in Thursday's daily Gazeta Wyborcza.
Two contenders are in the frame to replace Karwan - Kamil Kosowski of Wisla Krakow and Tomasz Dawidowski of Amica Wronki - although neither is used to playing on the right.
Poland have been drawn in World Cup group D with co-hosts South Korea, Portugal and the United States for the opening round. They face South Korea in their opening game in Pusan on June 4.
