WARSAW, Poland –– Poland's key midfielder Bartosz Karwan will miss the upcoming World Cup finals due to a strained muscle, Polish media reported Thursday.

Speaking to journalists at the team's training camp in Germany, Poland coach Jerzy Engel said Karwan won't travel with the team to South Korea as he won't be able to recover in time.

Karwan suffered the injury during Poland's warmup match against Romania April 17 and has since complained about pain in his right thigh that has prevented him from running at top speed.

The 26-year-old Legia Warsaw midfielder, who has been negotiating a contract with Bundesliga's Hertha Berlin, has scored three goals in 17 appearances for the national team.

Engel said he would look for a substitute when the team returns to Poland on Friday. He described Karwan's absence a "major blow" to the team's World Cup chances.

Poland plays Estonia in a warmup game on Saturday, and Engel said he would announce Poland's roster after the match.

Poland faces South Korea, Portugal and the United States in Group D.
