After the Cup circus, where the usual clowns took the last laugh, Liga Sagres is back with a tough test for Sporting. We are hosting the surprising leaders Leixões, a team that has been played undoubtedly some of the best football seen in this first quarter of our league.

Sporting showed against Shakhtar and especially against Porto that we are playing what is probably our best football so far this season. Even the way the crowd in Alvalade behaved in those two matches is also a sign of that. Speaking of which, this seems to be going to be our biggest game in terms of attendance so far this season.

With Tonel still injured and Caneira suspended, Paulo Bento is calling for the centre of our defence the youngster Daniel Carriço, who will be a starter for the first time in official matches for Sporting. Hopefully the start of a brilliant career in green and white for the most promising Portuguese CB of his generation.

Here's the starting XI for the game starting in 10' time:

Rui Patrício

Abel - Daniel Carriço - Anderson Polga - Miguel Veloso

Rochemback

João Moutinho (c) - Izmailov

Romagnoli

Hélder Postiga - Liedson

Subs: Ricardo Batista, Pedro Silva, Grimi, Adrien, Pereirinha, Yannick Djaló and Derlei.

What a clear penalty from Abel on Wesley.

Two hands around his body, fully holding him, and then throws him backwards to the pitch. :howler:

Man oh man our league's officiating is poor.

0-0 at HT

A balanced game, as expected, even if we had enough goal chances to be ahead in the score, namely by Romagnoli (great save by Beto), Postiga and the rookie Carriço.

Leixões have a very good group of players, especially that Braga guy, but we are blocking their counters really well in the midfield.

Two substitutions in 7 minutes for injury is too bad to be true.

0-1 by Roberto Souza at 66'.
Just like against Porto, Leixões goes ahead in the score, even if they haven't done much until now that justifies that. Sporting needs to step up our game in the last third if we want to turn this around.

At 71' Paulo Bento plays the last possible card - Yannick comes in for Carriço. We'll be playing with 3 in the back from now on.

0-1 FT

Well, Leixões did it again. The score is a bit too harsh for what really happened on the pitch as they scored from the only shot on goal they had during 94 minutes whereas Beto, their keeper, was probably the man of the match. It's not our year, that's a fact.

1-0 Leixoes win at the Alvalade. :eekani:

Jose Mota's team keeps impressing and pulling off great results.

Congrats to the top team in our league at the moment.

What?

Leixoes hit a post and also had a header saved in injury time.

Yes, you're right, I meant their first shot on goal, not their only. Anyway, that's irrelevant when looking at the amount of chances we have wasted.
What really matters at the end of it all is that we've lost, just like you did. I am sure Leixões will manage to grab a top 5 spot but I am also sure that when they visit Luz they'll be in the worst period of the season and lose with an own goal.
