Alright, the tests are over. Who should go to the World Cup?

The group I would take, which isn't what Dunga will probably take because some of these players weren't called often enough by "The Ornery One":

1- Julio Cesar
2- Maicon
3- Juan
4- Lucio
6- Kleber
5- Gilberto Silva
8- Felipe Melo
7- Daniel Alves
10-Kaka
11-Nilmar
9- Luis Fabiano

12-Gomes
13-Rafinha
14-Luisão
15-Thiago Silva
16-Andre Santos
17-Cristian
18-Lucas/Hernanes/Ramires
19-Elano
20-Alex (from Fenerbahce)/Alex (from Spartak Moscow)
21-Pato/Robinho
22-Adriano
23-Victor (Gremio)

I feel that this would be the best squad possible. Calling up Rafinha (the 3rd rightback with most call-ups under Dunga, with 3 call-ups and 1 game played) we would allow Daniel Alves to be exclusively a winger without also having to be Maicon's backup. The great veteran Alex would be a solid alternative to Kaka. I benched Robinho strictly due to personal preference but realistically speaking he'll probably be a starter - with the 2 goals against Ireland Robinho solidified his position as the NT's top goalscorer under Dunga's management with 15 goals (Kaka and Luis Fabiano come in 2nd with 10 goals each).

To make your choices easier, I'll soon post some statistics about the players Dunga called up since he became the NT's manager.

Why does Dunga not even consider Denilson of Arsenal in his squad selections?

Surely he's a better player than Lucas Leiva.

It's interesting to observe that despite the need to renovate our team after the 2006 fiasco, the group that was called to play against Ireland - assuming that it's mostly the group that will go to the WC - there are 9 players who have played the last WC.

From the players called up by Dunga for the Ireland game, these are the 9 who participated on the 2006 WC: Julio Cesar, Juan, Lucio, Luisão, Gilberto, Gilberto Silva, Kaka, Robinho and Adriano. This is one of the biggest numbers of "recycled" players from one WC to the next. Check it out:

Players from the 2002 WC who went to the 2006 WC:
10 (Dida, Cafu, Lucio, Roberto Carlos, Kaka, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho Gaucho, Rogerio Ceni, Gilberto Silva and Ricardinho)

Players from the 1998 WC who went to the 2002 WC:

Players from the 1986 WC who went to the 1990 WC:
7 (Alemão, Branco, Mauro Galvão, Valdo, Silas, Careca and Müller)

Players from the 1982 WC who went to the 1986 WC:
7 (Carlos, Oscar, Edinho, Falcão, Junior, Zico and Socrates)

Players from the 1978 WC who went to the 1982 WC:
8 (Carlos, Waldir Peres, Oscar, Edinho, Toninho Cerezo, Zico, Dirceu and Roberto Dinamite)

Players from the 1970 WC who went to the 1974 WC:

Players from the 1966 WC who went to the 1970 WC:

Ronaldinho should definately be in the world cup. He's not scoring a lot but his passes have been great. He's the reason A.C.Milan are in second place right now. Dunga should put him on the squad.

I think Grafite should have a place in the squad, if he maintains his current form.

Many have said that Pato competes with Nilmar and Robinho.

However, Pato can be a #9.

He played there under Ancelotti and now under Leo he is often in the box anyways when Ronaldinho has the ball, which explains all the goals he has been scoring lately.

Is Adriano really that good in Brazil that he is in the squad?

Adriano delivered for the team in some crucial moments during the last four years, so he has credit with Dunga. He was also the MVP of last year's Brasilian league. But since the beginning of the year he hasn't been in good form, and if he doesn't improve in time for the final call-up I suspect he may still lose his spot on the group. And I agree that Pato would be an alternative.

Pato is the only other option to Adriano. You can definitely make a case for Pato, but he needs to stay healthy and be in good form first.

Adriano is there because he is the only strong powerful centerforward
with big presence in the area, a true target player.
Mostly Brasil may play counter attacking but
during some stages this kind of player will be needed.
Pato is NOT that kind of player, Grafite is closer.

Adriano had a decent form last year, started to get back into shape
but I really hoped he wouldnt have looked sooo slow and heavy this year...
really worrying...

I can not tell you what the best Brazilian squad is, bu it surely must not consist of 2 Roma bench players (Baptista and Doni) :D
