Former River Plate boss to take over at Villarreal

MADRID, April 6 (Reuters) - Former River Plate boss chilean Manuel Pellegrini will take over as coach of Primera Liga side Villarreal next season, the Spanish club said on Tuesday.

The Chilean will replace caretaker boss Paquito who was appointed Villarreal coach until the end of the season after Benito Floro resigned in February.

Pellegrini, who was in charge of River for 18 months, left the Argentine club last December after they were dealt a shock defeat by Peruvian outsiders Cienciano in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, the South American equivalent of Europe's UEFA Cup.

Although River won one of the two annual Argentine titles under Pellegrini they spent most of the time in the shadow of arch-rivals Boca Juniors, who won the Libertadores Cup, the World Club Cup and the Apertura title last year.

Pellegrini, who steered San Lorenzo to the Clausura title in 2001, has also coached in Chile and Ecuador.

Villarreal play Celtic in the first leg of a UEFA Cup quarter-final on Thursday and are in 10th place in the Primera Liga.
