Baggies sign Swiss shot-stopper

West Bromwich Albion have moved to replace Chris Kirkland by signing Swiss World Cup shot-stopper Pascal Zuberbuhler.

With Kirkland's loan spell ending, and doubts remaining over the future of Tomasz Kuszczak, with Manchester United circling, Bryan Robson has reinforced his goalkeeping options by capturing the experienced international on a free transfer.

Zuberbuhler set a new World Cup record in Germany, keeping a clean sheet for 390 minutes as Switzerland became the first ever country to be eliminated without conceding a goal.

The 35-year-old was out of contract at Basel and has now opted to move to the West Midlands, penning a two-year deal with The Baggies.

The arrival of the experienced custodian seemingly opens up the possibility that Kuszczak could be moving to Old Trafford, but Robson insists he wants both keepers to compete for a place in his squad for the coming Championship season.

"Pascal is a vastly experienced goalkeeper and with Chris Kirkland going out, we needed a replacement," Robson told the club's official website.

"We needed another goalkeeper to compete with Tomasz.

"He is number one with Switzerland and he was rated as one of the top couple of goalkeepers in the World Cup.

"It's up to Tomasz and him to challenge for a place."

Zuberbuhler joins West Brom with a wealth of European and international experience under his belt, and is the club's third signing of the summer following John Hartson and Chris Perry.

I think he joins WB to replace Tomasz and not to compete with him as Robson said :rollani:

Very steady keeper though. Seemed to've been at Basel for like the last decade. :D

I actually personally rate him higher than Kuszczak

All the players WB signed are over 30 :rollani:

Well at least there wont be any 'bigger' team making pressure to get them

This guy is butter fingers, there's a reason he didn't make it at Leverkusen and why Basel gave up on him. A very strange signing, might be OK for first division but not more and definitely not better then Kuszczak.

Bahahaah

He's decent. Tomasz is rather excellent, though.
any guy who gives a game away like he did against Spurs last season deserves to be heckled for the rest of his life

ALBION insisted tonight (Friday) they have not agreed any deal with
Manchester United for Tomasz Kuszczak.

Despite speculation that Kuszczak was about to move to Old Trafford
as the No.2 goalkeeper.

Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace said: "We have had discussions with
Manchester United about a transfer deal involving Tomasz Kuszczak
but absolutely nothing has been agreed.

"We have said throughout the close season that it is our intention
to hold onto key members of the first-team squad not to sell them."

Albion earlier today signed Swiss World Cup goalkeeper Pascal
Zuberbuhler.

But he is seen as a replacement for Chris Kirkland, who has now
signed for Wigan, not for Kuszczak.

Got to say that from what I've heard PZ sounds like he isn't a keeper that passes the ball well out of the box to the defenders, but his a good shot stopper and has good reflexes.

No way hes better than TK.
TK is going United unless they cant agree personal terms, and I cant see that being an issue.

I just would like to know how satisfied (or not) you are with Zuberbühler's performances so far?

I cant see any of championship games, all I do is follow reports, forums and sometimes some highlights I can find.
In some threads (other WestBrom forum) iv seen that fans arent that happy with Zuberbuhler, they constantly complain about his mistakes, and actually many think that a new keeper should be signed in january.
Lately after a wining run, things are calm again, maybe Pascal is doin his job properly :)

Yeah, PZ's performances are somewhat erratic.

Sometimeshe plays well and shows class, othertimes you wonder if goalkeeping was his true calling!

Zuberbuhler facing the axe - Mowbray
Pascal Zuberbuhler's position is under threat after Tony Mowbray admitted the West Brom goalkeeper was suffering a crisis of confidence

Zuberbuhler has conceded five goals in his last two outings and has been the focus of taunting from Albion fans.

And now Mowbray has hinted Zuberbuhler could lose his starting position to Russell Hoult or Luke Steele.

Mowbray said: "The goalkeeping position is one we need to look at and address.

"I would suggest it is fair to comment Zubi's confidence is a bit down at the moment and I will address that as the week goes on."

------------

If not in january, than at the end of the season a new keeper has to be signed

What a shame that Kuszczak left to warm Mancs bench :(. If he stayed WBA would be at the top three of the table and he would play every week. SHAME.
