Serie A Week 14 - 4/12/04 (18.00)
Parma - Milan

Stadio Tardini

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A trip to the Stadio Tardini would have worried Milan in the past but they’ll be confident of winning in Week 14. Parma, with all of their financial problems, are no longer the force they were in the Italian game, while the champions are back on track after a difficult start to the new campaign.

The Rossoneri are now just four points behind leaders Juventus after a 1-0 win at Chievo last week. Boss Carlo Ancelotti fielded Massimo Ambrosini and Vikash Dhorasoo who both impressed which may see at least one of them retain their starting shirt. Hernan Crespo will definitely start against his former club after four goals in his last three games, probably alongside Andriy Shevchenko who returns from injury.

Parma are in real trouble. Although last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Sampdoria was their first in five games, the club remain in relegation trouble after picking up just 12 points in 13 games so far. To make matters worse, one of their best defenders in the form of Cesare Bovo is suspended after his dismissal in Week 13.

One Parma player who will be particularly looking to impress is star striker Alberto Gilardino. The Italian striker has been linked with a move to Milan, possibly in January, and he’ll be keen to impress his prospective new employers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parma (probable): Frey; Ferronetti, Bonera, Potenza, Contini; Marchionni, Simplicio, Grella, Bresciano; Morfeo; Gilardino

Milan (probable): Dida; Cafu, Nesta, Maldini, Kaladze; Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf; Kakà; Crespo, Shevchenko

Shev available for Parma Wednesday 1 December, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italian champions Milan have been boosted with the return of Andriy Shevchenko from injury.

The Golden Ball contender has spent the last two weeks on the treatment table but is back in training.

Shevchenko joined the rest of his colleagues on Tuesday following the 1-0 win over Chievo at the weekend.

The Ukrainian international is now expected to be selected for the Week 14 game against Parma.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti is set to field him alongside Hernan Crespo – who has scored four goals in his last three games.

There is further good news at Milanello after Billy Costacurta and Jon Dahl Tomasson have also proved their fitness.

The defender and the attacker are available for selection again but neither are set to be a part of Ancelotti’s first team plans.

Marchionni & Morfeo are injured, Gila hasn't found scoring continuity yet and the defence is a big crap! :( However I believe in my guys, the draw is likely to appear.

Nesta fears only Juventus Thursday 2 December, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alessandro Nesta believes the Scudetto race is strictly a two-horse affair between Milan and Juventus.

"I find the confrontation between the two clubs fascinating. They have always been our main rivals since my arrival here," said the Rossoneri stopper.

"We’ve faced each other in many battles and we’ve been successful on numerous occasions, even if they‘ve picked up the odd victory.

"At this moment in time, Juventus and Milan are the two strongest sides in the Division. It just remains to be seen who will come out on top this time.

"Inter? They can get back into the Scudetto race because they are a great side. However, they’ll need to put together a string of positive results."

Juventus currently have a four point lead over the San Siro giants, but there have been signs in recent weeks that Milan are getting back to their best.

"We are like a diesel given that it may take us a little while before we really get going," he added. "Despite the fact that we are not playing at our best yet, we are still up there."

Milan will hope to cut the gap even further on Saturday but face a tricky trip to Alberto Gilardino’s Parma.

"It won’t be my job to mark Gilardino because the whole defence will have to keep an eye on him," noted Nesta.

"Parma are certainly a good side, one who are a lot better than their current League position suggests. It will be a tough game."

Tardini always is always though, but we should win this one, specially with their injuries and our winning ways form of latest games.
Too bad to see that a Parma - Milan isn't getting as much attention as it was a couple of seasons ago. What Tanzi and co. have done to that club is outrageous. :(

We can't lose points now, with their currently quite crappy defense we have to striker and strike hard. that Marchionni is out is positive for us since he could have hurt us with his pace and trickyness. I expect a normal starting lineup, but would hope that Coloccini got another chance to play.

Baldini: We can beat Milan Friday 3 December, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Stadio Tardini will stage a top to tail battle and Parma boss Silvio Baldini insists they can defeat the reigning Champions.

“Our chances of beating the Rossoneri are slim, let us say around 10 per cent, but that is still a possibility,” said the tactician. “If we don’t believe in ourselves, then that slight chance will be wasted.”

Milan’s record in this stadium is not good, but this year Parma have struggled considerably with a young squad and are currently fighting relegation.

“Experience tells me that at times the most obvious predictions can be overturned,” added Baldini. “If that weren’t the case, then stepping on to the field would be pointless.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s men have already been shocked by some small clubs, beaten on home turf by new boys Messina and held to a draw by Brescia.

“This is like a university exam for us. We mustn’t worry about the result, instead channelling all our energy into being prepared for anything they throw at us.”

Parma have been able to rest this week in the UEFA Cup, so their players should be fresh and ready for this big match.

“Just being able to face a team of superstars like Milan is a lucky thing for any Coach,” continued the ex-Empoli man, “so I am certainly not afraid of the challenge. The bigger the test, the greater the honour and if we happen to get a positive result then it would boost our confidence for the whole campaign.”

Parma squad:

Berti, Bonera, Bovo, Bresciano, Budel, Camara, Cannavaro, Cardone, Contini, Ferronetti, Frey, Gilardino, Grella, Grieco, Maccarone, Marchionni, Morfeo, Pisanu, Potenza, Rosina, Ruopolo, Simplicio

Ancelotti: Never again, Juve Saturday 4 December, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carlo Ancelotti has added spice to the Scudetto chase by admitting he’d never return to Juventus, while preparing to face another old club, Parma.

“Of course it’s a shame I left Turin without winning any trophies, but there is absolutely no chance of a comeback. You should never return to the scene of a crime,” he joked.

Ancelotti was dubbed a ‘loser’ after twice finishing runner-up to the Scudetto with the Bianconeri, but in the last two years at Milan he has won the Champions’ League, Serie A title and Coppa Italia. His next challenge is to close the four-point gap to the leaders and to do that he must beat another of his former teams – Parma.

“We will try to play good football and give ourselves a sense of consistency after this fine run of results,” he said ahead of today’s trip to the Tardini.

“The whole squad is on good form, both physically and psychologically, and that will allow us to be ready for the upcoming top of the table clash with Juventus.”

The Rossoneri are boosted by the return of Andriy Shevchenko and Jon Dahl Tomasson, while former Parma hero Hernan Crespo is unstoppable at the moment with four goals in three games.

“If Sheva wins the European Player of the Year award, then it will be for the consistency with which he found the net throughout 2004. He has always done well with both Milan and the Ukraine national side, excelling in every competition.”

There are reports that Alberto Gilardino will be swapping his Parma shirt for a Milan one permanently in January and Ancelotti again praised the Italian international.

“Gilardino is the complete striker who is very capable in the box and can also hold up the ball for his teammates. He is an old-fashioned hit-man.”

However, the San Siro boss is not looking at today’s game as a turning point in the Serie A Championship.

“I don’t think the title race is over yet,” he assured. “I believe the real battle for both the Scudetto and Champions’ League begins in March. Fabio Capello and his players are accustomed to working under pressure and I doubt they’ll slip up before then.”

Milan squad:

Gk: Abbiati, Dida, Fiori

D: Cafu, Coloccini, Kaladze, Maldini, Nesta, Pancaro

M: Ambrosini, Dhorasoo, Gattuso, Kakà, Pirlo, Rui Costa, Seedorf, Serginho

F: Crespo, Shevchenko, Tomasson

1 out of 9! :eekani:
And that win came on 25 Nov 2001, Ancelotti's first visit to the Stadio Ennio Tardini as Milan's coach, courtesy of a headed goal from Pippo Inzaghi.

Given our not so great record at Parma, 3 points is all I ask for from this game.

Forza Milan
Still 0-0

From Eurosport:

41' Cafu with a muscular challenge on Contini near the left corner flag...corner for Parma...but it's an awful delivery from out wide and Crespo clears at the near post.

40' Crespo turning away disconsolately as another ball into the Parma box runs away with him...

39' Gilardino backing into Maldini on the edge of the Milan box...goes down as the pair jostle for a high ball...but for all his doe-eyed pleading with the ref, he's not getting a free-kick for that.

38' Nesta clips Gilardino as the Parma forward spins past him and Parma have a free-kick near the right corner of the box...Bresciano and Simplicio over it...SIMPLICIO KNOCKS IT DEEP! But too close to Dida, who catches unchallenged.

36' Ferroneti finding Simplicio...angled ball to the edge of the box for Pisanu...WHOSE FIRST TOUCH TAKES HIM INSIDE AND AWAY FROM CAFU!! LOW SHOT!! Just wide...but Dida had that covered.

33' Pancaro racing down the left...inside for Shevchenko...EDGE OF THE BOX! CAN'T BREAK THROUGH! FALLS FOR SEEDORF! SURGES IN! GREAT SAVE FREY! And Kaka skews the follow-up well wide...

31' Shevchenko showing his frustration as he leaves Cannavaro in a crumpled heap...the Milan forward fortunate to escape a booking.

28' Milan striving but Parma closing down well...but we've seen nothing of Gilardino as yet.

26' Parma battling their way back into the game...life getting a little harder for Milan.

24' Gattuso works a little ball in towards Crespo...NICKS THE BALL OVER BONERA! But the Parma defender gets his body in between the Crespo and the ball and gets it away.

21' Milan swarming all around the Parma box...the pressure relieved though as Crespo, bang in form at the moment, strays offside...but surely only a matter of time before Milan strike.

19' Seedorf dispossessed by a great challenge from Ferronetti...and Parma break down the right...but Gilardino's touch lets him down and Shevchenko comes away with it.

18' Parma coming forward...but the final ball just lacking at the moment and it's through to Dida.

16' Carlo Ancelotti nervously pacing the technical area with his hood on his coat very much up as the rain beats down in Parma.

14' Ball slanted left to right for Shevchenko...CHEST CONTROL TAKES HIM PAST CONTINI!! LEFT-FOOT STRIKE!! OFF THE POST! Frey beaten...great strike.

12' The match being played almost exclusively in the Parma half...

10' Seedorf with a corner from the left...DEEP ONE TO THE EDGE OF THE BOX FOR PIRLO!! STRIKES! But doesn't catch his volley cleanly and it's well wide of Frey's goal.

7' Former Milan boss Alberto Zaccheroni in the crowd to watch this one...

6' Milan corner from the right after Kaka's run wins the set-piece...but it's a poor delivery from the Brazilian, far too low to the near post and it's cleared.

3' Seedorf brought down...as he breaks forward, Parma imposing themselves on Milan
