Maldini sure of Paraguay's success in 2002 World Cup
ASUNCION, April 12 (DS) -
In the short period of the work with the Paraguayan national team, it was found out that Italian specialist Cesare Maldini doesn't like giving interviews to mass media representatives. However, he agreed to give an interview to Argentinean radio station La Red correspondent Fernando Niembro causing rumours on his discrimination towards local journalists. This interview was made public by one of the Argentinean TV channels. During the interview Maldini said that unlike Italy, it is necessary to be careful in Paraguay because unexpected events can occur at each and every moment. The head coach probably hinted the absence of a necessary organization dealing with football in that country. He also mentioned that he intends to entrust goalkeeper Chilavert to release penalties.
Niembro started the interview as follows: "I was surprised that you agreed to head the Paraguayan national team." With this statement Niembro hinted how such an excellent specialist as Maldini could agree to head a team that is not among great ones of the world.
Answering this question, Maldini said that it gave him an opportunity to take part in the World Cup.
He added: "Paraguay play in a particular manner. Of course, they aren't distinguished with their special mastery but players are temperamental."
The great specialist also touched upon the theme of favourites of the 2002 World Cup. He considers Argentina and France to be the key favourites.
Maldini announced: "The performance level of German and Brazilian national teams is falling now. As to Italy, they have many good players, for example, my son and Vieri. As a matter fact, my son will participate in the World Cup for the fourth time."
Concerning their rivals in the World Cup, Maldini said: "Spain are the best in the group thanks to their high-class players. But I believe in the success of Paraguay. They have already proved their capabilities."
