Serie A Week 29 - 12/3/06 (14.00 UK)
Palermo 2 - 0 Udinese
Di Michele 53 (P), Tedesco 64 (P)
Stadio Barbera

David Di Michele brought down the club he only left in January, as Palermo put their run of poor form behind them, but Udinese are increasingly in crisis.

This was a battle of the underachievers, as both teams had hoped for so much more at the start of the season. Having said that, they were also still in the running for the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia, a strain that has probably taken its toll on their Serie A form. Udinese co-Coaches Nestor Sensini and Loris Dominissini were still looking for their first win and came face to face with David Di Michele, who only left the Friuli outfit in January. The visitors had Chris Obodo and Damiano Zenoni suspended, while Fabio Grosso and Eugenio Corini were injured for the Rosanero.

The very windy conditions striking Sicily made play difficult, as the ball's movement through the air was affected by the conditions.

Di Michele had the opportunity to score against his old club early on, but he came sliding on to a Denis Godeas cut-back and totally scuffed his shot when it might've been easier to score.

Morgan De Sanctis rushed off his line and fingertipped a corner kick off the head of Cristian Terlizzi.

Denis Godeas wasted another good chance for the Sicilians, then on the half-hour mark Di Michele's splendid free kick slammed the upright with De Sanctis beaten.

Paulo Barreto's shot was parried by Federico Agliardi's outstretched foot and Sulley Ali Muntari was unable to make the most of the loose ball.

Massimo Mutarelli won the fair play award when he told the referee that he got the final touch, so a corner was reversed into a goal kick for Udinese.

Federico Agliardi fumbled the ball on the edge of the area and Fausto Rossini's shot was heading towards the empty net, but Terlizzi flung himself at the ball for a decisive goalline clearance in first half stoppages.

Andrea Caracciolo replaced Godeas in the second half, but it was former Friuli hero Di Michele who broke the deadlock with a spectacular finish.

Having hit the woodwork in the first half, his magnificent curling free kick went in off the underside of the crossbar in the very top corner of the net.

It was another January signing, substitute Giovanni Tedesco, who made it 2-0 moments are stepping on to the field. A free kick was held up by Mutarelli for Tedesco to nod in at the back post.

Agliardi was able to intercept Iaquinta's counter-attack on Antonio Di Natale's through ball at the last moment.

Palermo required another goalline clearance with Andrea Barzagli keeping out Barreto's attempt after an Agliardi howler.

Udinese were eager to at least get a consolation goal and Agliardi frustrated Di Natale with a fine save at the near post, then Muntari fired the loose ball over the bar.

The Friuli outfit kept pushing and in stoppages Agliardi secured the clean sheet with a fine save on Muntari's header into the top corner.

Nearer and nearer the relegation zone each week
