Serie A Week 8 - 26/10/08 (19.30 UK)
Palermo - Fiorentina
Stadio Barbera

Pink meets purple as upwardly mobile Fiorentina travel to Sicily to face inconsistent Palermo.

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini’s honeymoon period with beloved Coach Davide Ballardini could be coming to an end. The fiery chief asserted that his tactician “made mistakes” in the Rosanero’s painful derby defeat against Catania last weekend and the Aquile really have come back down to earth after a win over Juventus.

There is a quiet rivalry between these two opponents as they are similar sized clubs and Palermo will be looking to send a message to the Viola that they can challenge the big boys this term.

Fiorentina seem to have put their slow start to the season behind them and are gaining momentum. Cesare Prandelli has amassed three consecutive wins but the distraction of a midweek epic clash against Bayern Munich, which they lost 3-0, may have taken the focus off the Tuscans’ trip to the Stadio Renzo Barbera.

The Viola came to a stuttering stop in Sicily last year when they fell to a 2-0 defeat and saw Azzurri stopper Alessandro Gamberini pick up an injury.

Ballardini can’t call upon defender Moris Carrozzieri – who was Serie A’s most carded player last term – because he is suspended after his red card against Catania. Cesare Bovo, Mark Bresciano and Levan Mchedlidze are all injured.

Romanian striking star Adrian Mutu could return to action for Fiorentina after his lay-off with an elbow injury, but he still isn’t 100 per cent and Stevan Jovetic or Gianpaolo Pazzini may get the start alongside Alberto Gilardino. Martin Jorgensen, Franco Semioli and Per Kroldrup are out with injuries.

Keep an eye on: Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina) – Hailed by Prandelli as an example for the rest of the squad, the ex-Milan marksman hit two goals as a substitute last weekend to take his tally to 10 goals in all competitions.

Last season: Palermo 2-0 Fiorentina

Form guide: Palermo (W L W W L) Fiorentina (W L W W W)
Palermo (probable): Amelia; Cassani, Bovo, Dellafiore, Balzaretti; Migliaccio, Liverani, Nocerino, Simplicio; Cavani, Miccoli

Fiorentina (probable): Frey; Comotto, Dainelli, Gamberini, Gobbi; Donadel, Melo, Kuzmanovic; Santana, Gilardino, Jovetic

Hard match. Gobbi surely won't play because of injury, should it be Pasqual to repalce him, or Vargas, to feel confidence? According to what Prandelli, Santana and others are saying in these days, it seems the problem of the peruvian could be in his head.

If all are refreshed, I would go with exactly the same lineup of wednesday, just Donadel at the place of Montolivo, keeping Vargas on the pitch. Zauri - Comotto is 50-50 for me, Zauri seemed to have good understanding with Kuz and Santana.

Very hard game will be this!If we play like against Bayern and have a little more luck we can win because they have some problems in the backline!I want Mutu to keepl playing and show his value! In my opinion he was good against Bayern! This is very important game, because for three days we are going to play with Inter!

If anything, Vargas cemented his spot in the line-up. He has to regain confidence and sitting on the bench is going to do nothing but destroy him, he'll be ready to put in a stellar performance and there is no better way then going head to head with tough opposition.

wow...what a highly entertaining game. first time this season i have seen fiorentina play some beautiful and resourceful passing game...palermo have good attack, but their defense is their weekness....both goalies are having a great game by the way...
the score should have been something like 3-2 or 3-1 for viola

santana and kuzma have been pretty good
