Barcelona have re-affirmed their interest in acquiring Arsenal's Marc Overmars and at the same time laughed off suggestions that playmaker Josep Guardiola is available for £3.9 million.

Barca initially contacted Arsenal over the possibility of an exchange involving Ronald de Boer and Winston Bogarde after both had performed poorly at the start of last season.

However, Arsenal wanted a cash only settlement, holding out for a sum in the region of 3,000 million pesetas (£11.3 million) but, with the resignation of Louis van Gaal from Barcelona, all deals are currently off.

What is known is at the moment, whoever the new coach will be, it will depend on the reaction of the players to him as to what the Camp Nou side do. If a mass exodus is warranted then the chase for Overmars will be stepped up.

With regards to the reports of Guardiola being on the market, Spanish media have quoted sources at Barcelona saying these stories relate to a period several months ago when the international star was out-of-favour.

Van Gaal had stated that 'Pep' would not be at the club after the end of last season, after a period on the bench and time out with a dubious injury.

With the Dutch coach out of the way it seems that Guardiola's future is more secure at Barcelona, although a recent studly which was commissioned by the directors of the club, valued the playmaker at 1,000 million pesetas (£3.7 million
