Pirlo prays for Inter defeat Tuesday 30 April, 2002
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrea Pirlo has held his Milan credentials high by admitting he hopes that Inter lose the Scudetto on the last day of the season.
The former Nerazzurri starlet spent more time on the bench than on the field and admits he has nothing but bitter memories of the club.
“I really hope that Inter don’t win this,” said the Under-21 international in today’s press conference. “I don’t care if Juventus or Roma take the title, but the important thing is that it’s not Inter.”
“They never had any faith in me,” explains Pirlo, “so it is right that I changed teams. I am the one who decided to leave and I had the good fortune to end up at Milan.”
The midfielder – once tipped to be the next Roberto Baggio – left last summer in a surprise £15m deal.
For the first few months his career appeared to be heading in the same direction, but with Manuel Rui Costa’s continuing injury problems Pirlo found himself an integral part of the team.
“Since the first day at Milan,” explained the 23-year-old, “I decided to give everything as this could be the turning point in my career, the right team to hit the heights.”
“When I wore the Nerazzurri jersey I didn’t feel any faith in my abilities. Now I trust my own talents and have matured thanks to my teammates and this club. I hope one day to become a leader for Milan.”
Inter had signed the youngster in 1998 from Brescia, only to send him out on loan to Reggina a year later. Even the arrival of his former Under-21 Coach and mentor Marco Tardelli did not find him space at the club.
Now it is hoped that he can stay part of the Milan starting eleven even when Manuel Rui Costa returns to full fitness.
“I think that it is possible to co-exist with Rui. I have proved that I can play in midfield as well as behind the front two. Sacrificing myself for the team is not a problem for me.”
His winning goal at Verona last week – keeping his cool to dribble round the goalkeeper – could prove decisive in Milan’s attempts to qualify for the Champions’ League.
A victory against Lecce at the San Siro – and Bologna’s failure to beat Brescia away – would automatically assure them of fourth place.
“Lecce won’t do us any favours just because they are already relegated,” warns Pirlo, “but our motivation is certainly stronger. The Champions’ League is within our grasp and we don’t want to mess it up.”
