I never watch the academy awards but looking at the nominees...

I would like 21 Grams, The Barbarian Invasions, Lost in Translation, Mystic River, House of Sand and Fog to win big but ofcourse it ain't gonna happen.

The Oscars are a really weird award ceremony. It can’t be said to celebrate true artistic achievement, since history teems with examples of masterpieces passed over in favor of middlebrow beanbags. Nor can it be said to celebrate commercial achievement, since it often turns its nose up at blockbusters, even good ones.. so it's really a pointless endeavor in the end but it's always nice to see some good films nominated even though they won't win.

I would like to see Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio Del Toro or Johnny Depp win for their roles.. As for director, I want to se it go to Fernando Meirelles - especially if LOTR wins Best Picture, which it will.. don't think PJ deserves this..

I didnt see them all ...

However, to give 10 nominees, I mean, to give ene one to a movie like Master and Comander is simply outrageous. The movie is bad, illogical and boring. Makes no sense.

The Ring deseves it I guess .. the 11. It might take teh big one too.

Its not my fav movie, but for an Oscar, knwoing the logic behind it, I woudl say - yes. Its the last one anyway, its a great epic/saga shot well and directed biriliantly (for such a movie).

I am to see Mystic River, that most of my friends are quite enthusiastic about ...

Agreed, though it looks set to land the Big Picture prize this year... as bono said ROTK is the last of the movie trilogy and so far the LOTR films have not won a Best Director or Best Director award yet. Out of the three I would say the first one is the best, but that year the Oscars snubbed it in favour of The Beautiful Mind :yuck: for Best Picture.

Return of the King has its merits, but what was disappointing about it (certain characterisation issues aside) was the awful pacing of the film and the lacklustre score by Howard Shore. Shore has done a terrific job with the first two movies, pity the third one wasn't quite up to scratch.

I have not seen all of the films mentioned, but just some predictions:

BEST PICTURE
LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Achievement in Directing
Clint Eastwood for MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Sean Penn in MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)

Best Supporting Actor
Tim Robbins in MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)

Best Supporting Actress
Renee Zellwegger in COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)

Best Original Screenplay
LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features) by Sofia Coppola

Best Adapted Screenplay
No idea, but I don't think LOTR will win this.

Best Animated Feature Film
FINDING NEMO - Andrew Stanton

bono - What's this about The Ring? It isn't nominated.. Even if it was, I think Naomi Watts is better 21 Grams, which is a better movie on the whole as well.. :) A&K - Agreed on ROTK, but the academy always looks for ways of presenting a final crowning achievement, and you all ways have that at the last sequel. It's awfully predictable, but they may just surprise us and give it to Mystic River in tribute to Clint Eastwood or something.. but I doubt it.

I guess I should go see Monster after all this fuss about Charlize Theron.. must be something..

If I were the academy.. and I haven't seen all the movies, but from what I have - I'd do this.. :)

I love Lord of the Rings, but I won't be too upset if it doesn't win BP this year, would be nice to see the Oscar bigwigs displaying a sense of fair-mindedness... though as you said it is highly doubtful. I thought Cold Mountain is a strong candidate for BP as well, damn classy film... call it my blatant bias for the blindingly goodlooking Jude Law ;), but I really enjoyed that film.

Oh, and bono's referring to the Lord Of The Rings I'm sure... I thought The Ring is a 2002 movie and I think the only time it appeared in a 2003 film was in the ridiculous spoof in Scary Movie 3.

No bono, according to your usual posting style it should be "teh Ring." :D
:D I was about to say that.. :lala:

A&K - Well Cold Mountain isn't nominated for Best Picture, rightfully so.. but I don't see why Master & Commander is there instead. Makes no sense. Jude Law is nominated for Actor though, odds are he won't win it. I don't see why Zellwegger is nominated for her supporting role, I found it hackneyed and overdone by her standards..

You never know who'll win these things. I do hope that Charlize Theron wins. She was quite good in Monster, but basically its just because I did some work for her a few years ago, and she is a really nice and considerate person. :)

I just sent some gifts for her (she was dating a guy in SF at the time, the one that used to sing for 3rd Eye Blind). We only spoke on the phone. Most actors and actresses have their publicist or assistants deal with the peons. This was back when she was in the movie with the ape, so god knows she probably has a couple of personal assistants by now.
