Hard to understand the troubles in the Brazilian League? Well, we can try to clear it up...

Opinion by Cassiano Ricardo Gobbet.

When the last Brazilian league finished, it was safe to bet that a lot of trouble was delayed for this season. Anyway, as long as Eurico Miranda (Vasco da Gama’s boss) himself determined that Gama wouldn’t participate the 2000 Brazilian league, everyone in Brazil tended to think that little Gama was really out. But more than six months after the end of the last league, Gama proved that having powerful friends in Brazil can help a lot. To not be sanctioned by FIFA, several politicians from Gama’s state (Federal District) charged CBF in the courts to guarantee the rights Gama won on the pitch.

Now the situation is really pleasant for Gama. A very small club, without tradition or money, but with influence enough to force the whole Brazilian football establishment to it's knees. Gama was punished by FIFA, according to requests from Ricardo Teixeira, CBF’s president. Then, just like in a movie, the Clube dos 13 (an entity formed by the major clubs in Brazil) pretended surprise and affirmed that they would not play the Brazilian league, but a cup organized by themselves, the "João Havelange Cup". Behind the curtains, the main purpose of this disgusting cup was to leave Gama out of the first division.

It didn’t do any good. The Brazilian courts acted correctly and ordered that Gama should play in the first division this year, independent of the name given to the competition. Translated: whether it be in the Brazilian League, the João Havelange Cup or the Mr. Bean Tournament, Gama is entitled to be among the major Brazilian clubs this year.

Now Eurico and his chumps are desperate. They can’t include Gama in the tournament because there was a punishment from FIFA (requested by themselves), based on illegal arguments (Gama didn’t enter into common justice - FIFA punished them anyway). In the other hand, the Clube dos 13 have to organize a tournament because they already sold the TV transmission rights, and in case of not having a tournament, there is a US$ 50 million fine. I know it is hard to get, but believe me: it is even for the people who arranged all this mess.
