Celtic look set to make an offer for Belgian Euro 2000 defender Joos Valgaeren - with Martin O'Neill reported to be preparing a £4 million bid.

Valgaeren currently plays for Roda JC, was scouted by former Leicester City boss O'Neill whilst he was in Benelux as part of the BBC commentary team for the European Championships, and an approach has been confirmed by the player's agent Guido Mallants.

Mallants, speaking to the Daily Record, said: "There is strong interest from Celtic in Joos and I spoke with the manager last week about the possibility of a transfer.

"There is also some interest from England, but Joos would be interested in coming to a big club like Celtic.

"It is up to the two clubs to decide a transfer fee before anything else can be considered but if that happens we will be happy to talk again with Celtic."

Despite his nation's inability to qualify for the knock-out stages - Valgaeren has emerged as the first of O'Neill's promised targets from the competition, and, if a fee can be agreed between the two clubs, could make his switch to Parkhead in the coming weeks, if interest can be fended off from a host of English clubs.

Arsenal have reportedly already bid £6.1 million for the central defender, and this immediately ruled Sunderland out of the running, although the Kerkrade side are still holding out for £7 million.
