O'Neill linked with Spurs vacancy

MARTIN O'NEILL looks set to become Tottenham's new manager if they pay him £2million a year in wages.

The Celtic boss believes he has gone as far as he can at Parkhead by winning the one-side SPL and reaching the group stages of the Champions League.

Now he wants a fresh challenge in the Premiership and Spurs have the financial clout to give him the chance to make a decent impression following the £15m raised in a shares issue last month.

O'Neill has the original target for the White Hart Lane board but they switched their attentions to Italy national coach Giovanni Trapattoni.

The former Inter Milan and Juventus coach has yet to sign a deal announcing he is to move to London after the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal.

And, according to the Evening Standard, Spurs are now back on the trail of O'Neill.

He is reported to be happy to succeed Glenn Hoddle even though David Pleat will remain as director of football.

His wife is known to want to move back to the family home near Wycombe where her husband was in charge before spells at Norwich and Leicester City.

And Spurs looks the best option as Sir Alex Ferguson has signed a new contract at Manchester United and Gerard Houllier looks increasingly safe at Liverpool with players returning from injury and vocally pledging their support.
