After a week dominated by the celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the mythical 7-1 and also by the first gossip regarding the potential exits and arrivals to happen during the winter transfer window, the league is back with a classic in Alvalade.

Sporting hosts Académica de Coimbra, a traditionally tough team to beat in Alvalade. The "Students" haven't had good results so far in the league but their football has been pretty decent, when compared to the one of our opponents of last week, for example.

Alvalade will be fully packed as the Board very well took advantage of the season and launched a huge X-mas marketing campaign to take families of sportinguistas to see the game live. Let's hope the party will be completed with a convincing display and above all, with the 3 points. :hopefull:

Here's the list of players called by Paulo Bento for this match:

Goalkeepers: Ricardo and Tiago.
Defenders: Abel, Marco Caneira, Tonel, Miguel Veloso, Ronny and Rodrigo Tello.
Midfielders: Custódio, Paredes, João Alves, João Moutinho, Farnerud and Nani.
Forwards: Alecsandro, Yannick Djaló, Liedson and Bueno.

Força SPORTING!!! :strong:

Yeah, I'm sure he would be a decisive factor in this game

Anyway, have you seen Belenenses destroying Marítimo tonight?
I wouldn't like to have to face them next week :smileani:

Well, Barbosa is one of the best three or four players every time I've seen him with Academica, which was a handful of times.

About Belenenses, I was just about to talk about it in the Portuguese forum. I saw the entire game, what a performance!

Liedson, who has his 29th birthday on sunday, opened the way to the last home win against Académica:
To make a party with goals
Since 2003/04 - Fernando Santos was the coach - that Sporting is not able to beat the Students in Alvalade

by Jean-Paul Lares
Translated from O Jogo
15.12.2006

The main reference of the Lions' attack during the last seasons, Liedson celebrates, next sunday, his 29th birthday. He is one of the great names of Sporting's football squad and, after three and half seasons with the Lion's crest on his jersey, he is a fundamental piece of the startegy drawn by the coach Paulo Bento, just like it had happened with José Peseiro and Fernando Santos, his predecessors on Sporting's managing team.

Now, in a moment that the competition is about to reach its Christmas break, Liedson celebrates another year of his life, on a celebration that will happen tonight against Académica. And, in what concerns the match against the Students, the 31 might have an important word to say. If it is true that, in the last two seasons, Sporting was uncapable of beating the men from Coimbra in Alvalade - under José Peseiro, they drew 0-0 in 2004/05 and lost, 1-0 in 2005/06 -, it was thanks to agoal of the Brazilian that the Lions started drawing their last victory: 2-0 in 2003/04, managed by Fernando Santos.

Let us recall that Liedson arrived in Alvalade in the summer of 2003 and, in spite of being no more than an unknown character for the public, soon he established himself as one of the favourites amongst Sporting's fans.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEVEZINHO!!!

When I said on the first post of this thread that Académica normally poses problems in Alvalade, I was obviously referring to the last two seasons because historically our domination in that game is overwhelming...

SPORTING vs Académica:
42W 07D 05L
Goals: 166-46

Scores of the last 10 seasons:
2005/06 0-1
2004/05 0-0
2003/04 2-0
2002/03 1-0
1998/99 5-0
1997/98 1-0
1987/88 4-0
1986/87 1-1
1985/86 2-0
1984/85 4-4

For the first time this season it looks like Paulo Bento will repeat the same starting XI, which gives reason to those that defended that he was not doing the rotation of players due to his stubborness but simply because he wanted to manage energies between the two competitions where the club was involved until a couple of weeks ago.

So, this should be Sporting's line-up for the game starting in about 2 and a half hours:

It's amazing the fact that Sporting, in spite of the two bad results that happened this month, still manages to mobilise the fans for a game like this, gather 7000 people coming from Sporting's regional and local groups spread all around the country and sell out Alvalade! :eekani: :proud:

SPORTING 1-0 Académica (HT)

We should be up for many more after the total domination seen in this first half. Hopefully Liedson will give himself one or two more birthday presents in the second. :hopefull:

Sporting is not playing as well as in the first half but did more than enough to be ahead for more than 1 goal.

Custódio IN > Ronny OUT at 71'

Good move by Paulo Bento as Académica was menacing to use the space left by Ronny in the back.

Sporting is doing what unfortunately happened so many times this season. Instead of pushing for the second is defending the 1-0 lead. And to make things better the ref is allowing Académica to do the usual leg chopping game of our visitors.

SPORTING 1-0 Académica (FT)

It could have been a rout but Sporting ends up defending the one goal lead.
The fact is that we won the 3 points and now the ball is on Porto's side.
