After two weeks of break the Portuguese League is back with a tough match for us. Marítimo is traditionally a hard team to beat in Madeira and this year they seem to have a solid team. Apart from this Sporting has a few players injured (Yannick Djaló and Tiago) and others which are not confirmed yet to be 100% fit for the match (Tonel and Ricardo).

Paulo Bento called the 18 year old keeper Rui Patrício for the first time this season and he might even play if Ricardo does not recover from a slight injury.

Here is the list of the players called:

Goalkeepers: Ricardo and Rui Patrício.
Defenders: Abel, Miguel Garcia, Marco Caneira, Tonel, Anderson Polga and Ronny.
Midfielders: Custódio, Paredes, Carlos Martins, Farnerud, João Moutinho and Nani.
Forwards: Bueno, Alecsandro and Liedson.

Arrival at Madeira in big party mood
Translated from A Bola
18.11.2006

Sporting's squad was received with real euphoria at the end of this afternoon in Madeira, where this Sunday they will face Marítimo in a match counting for the 10th round of the Portuguese League.

Several dozens of supporters were waiting for the team, which made Paulo Bento ans his peers take a long time to be able to cross the hall of Funchal's airport until reaching the bus parked outside.

Amongst supporters songs, João Moutinho was one of the most requested, with the fans taking advantage to "hunt" the usual autographs and, of course, to pose for a picture side by side with the midfielder.

Madeira goes on being green! :)

Oh boy I'd love to see a Maritimo victory here. 5 points at the top would be awfully nice, especially considering we played so poorly and still got the victory today.

Safe to say Nani returns to the starting XI, Filipe?

As I wrote on the first post of this thread, it's going to be hard, as it is always for us in Madeira, but I have the feeling that we will win this one.

Yes, it seems that Nani has strong chances of coming back to the starting XI. I'm not sure about who'll be in defense and upfront but I think the midfield will probably look like this:

Custódio
Nani --- João Moutinho
Carlos Martins

Very nice. The midfield I've been asking for as long as Veloso is in defense which might occur given Tonel's suspect status. Any word on that by the way or still questionable?

Well, reading through the papers this morning it seems that the only two from these four that seem to have an unquestioned place later this afternoon are Custódio and JM. It is possible that we start with Farnerud instead of CM exactly like we did against Braga...we'll see.

About Veloso he was not called for this game for the first time this season. I think Paulo Bento wants to save him for the game with Inter. Tonel seems to be fit enough to start and in any case Caneira will be on the bench for any eventual need.

This is the starting XI that I feel will be used by PB:

Well, it has been obvious this season that one of the most difficult things to do as a Sporting fan is to guess what line-up Paulo Bento will display in every single game. This time once again he did changes that were not exactly expected and here is the starting XI for the game against Marítimo that just started in Madeira:

Força Rui Patrício!

This 18 year old kid was called for the first time to the first team of Sporting and due to Ricardo's injury he is now starting against Marítimo.

Total domain of Sporting so far but no goals yet. The ref has just forgiven a red card to a Marítimo player that elbowed Nani in the face. :rollani:

0-0 (HT)

Sporting should be at least 2-0 up after this first half. I hope Paulo Bento brings Alecsandro in as we need someone to kill the match quickly.

Amazing stuff by Rui Patrício!!! On his first match for Sporting's first team he saves a penalty and brings justice to the game!

Marítimo 0-1 SPORTING (FT)

A very good game by Sporting that deserved a better score. For the first time ever we managed to beat the two teams from Madeira away in the same season! :proud:

I can't say enough about Rui Patricio.

I watched the game with my father and we were both surprised at how calm and collective the boy was the entire game. Even after stopping the penalty, his teammates came to congratulate him and he pushed them away and screamed to get ready for the corner kick.

Very, very promising keeper, looks like a real gem.
