Finally the League is back. Sporting spent almost 3 weeks without playing and with the young promise Bruno Pereirinha as our only new face in the squad we are prepared to face Belenenses on another Lisbon classic.

Never an easy game and this year Belenenses has showed some pretty good football which is not a surpise as I rate Jorge Jesus as one of the best coaches of his generation.

Our lusitano red pasquim did today all its best to diverge attentions from the embarrassing events of last night and announced on their front page that Nani was punished...as if leaving a player out of the call for a game would automatically mean that he has a conflict with the coach. They really have nothing else to invent :rollani:

Ricardo is also out with a flu and Paredes is absent to take care of personal stuff in Paraguay. Rodrigo Tello is suspended.

Here's the list of players called by Paulo Bento for the match starting in about 3 hours:

Goalkeepers: Tiago and Rui Patrício.
Defenders: Abel, Tonel, Anderson Polga, Miguel Veloso, Marco Caneira and Ronny.
Midfielders: Carlos Martins, Custódio, Farnerud, João Moutinho, Bruno Pereirinha and Romagnoli.
Forwards: Yannick Djaló, Bueno, Alecsandro and Liedson.

0-0 (HT)

The game was not bad until now but Sporting is not playing well. Nevertheless the only goal chance was ours but unfortunately João Moutinho wasted it. Let's hope we can wake up in the 2nd half.

at 68' Paulo Bento brings new blood in the attempt of winning the game in spite of being down to 10 men.

Bruno Pereirinha and Miguel Veloso come in for Alecsandro and Ronny.

Sporting is now playing like this:

Tiago
M.Caneira -- Tonel -- A.Polga -- M.Veloso
Custódio
B.Pereirinha --- J.Moutinho
Y.Djaló -- Liedson

7 players made in Alvalade :proud:

0-0 (FT)

Poor game from Sporting although the result could have been worst as we played 25 minutes with one man down due to the stupidity of Carlos Martins.

has Pontus Farnerud proven to be any good?

he was supposed to be on his way to Feyenoord on a loan deal last January (even arrived at Schiphol airport) before his club then Strasbourg pulled the plug on the deal

Carlos Martins - stupid, stupid, stupid. What a bad temper.

Belenenses played very well in the first half, then Sporting started to take over in the second half as expected, but the aforementioned idiot Martins gets sent off on a BAD challenge for a second yellow. He knew it right when he did it, too.

Liedson was being a jerk all game long as well, to the manager, the keeper, everybody.

Filipe, who was the Belenenses player who did the hand ball goal in the first half? I thought it was Ze Pedro, but it wasn't.

Also, Anderson Polga... what else can be said? Absolutely immense, what a defender. He saved a goal today on the goal-line with a nice save and nobody got past him. He's really come into his own and is dominant back there.

Mancuso was the name of the guy that tried to score the second handball goal against us this season...one is enough! :frustrat:

I agree on the stupidity of Carlos Martins and also on the great game by Polga but before attacking Liedson you should have in mind the amount of times he was kicked and pulled by that CB Nivaldo. Of course he should be used to that but sometimes enough is enough.

He still didn't have that much playing time but from what I've seen so far, he is a good substitute. I hope this answers your question. :D

On the contrary to what some people could think I don't think that Sporting did not win yesterday against Belenenses simply because Carlos Martins decided to transform the chance given to him by the coach to grab a place in the regular starting line-up of the team into one of his usual cock ups. Of course that incident reduced even more our chances to be able to pressure Belenenses into their own half but I do think that
Sporting's problem yesterday was exactly the same that has been following us for all the current season: a lack of a couple of key players in the midfield that can transport the game back and forth and do the so called "transitions".

João Moutinho has been the only one of our players that often has performed that role in a very positive way but even him yesterday seemed rusty from the long (too long perhaps) winter break.

Now it's difficult to imagine seeing Porto losing 7 points although it was also difficult to imagine seeing Porto being kicked out of the Cup by losing home against a third division team.

I hope Rochemback can really get rid of Boro and join us as we really need some new punch in that midfield, although that by itself will not solve our squad shortages.

Crucification

by João Sanches
Translated from O Jogo
15.01.2007

With his mind on a blur, Carlos Martins lost the notion of the limits of useful aggressiveness, and his carelessness led the referee Jorge Sousa to show him two yellow cards - and a red - in only 45 seconds in the game with Belenenses. In this way, he once again neglected a new opportunity to relaunch himself into the first XI. A waste that, in terms of numbers on the pitch, penalised the group, and on the individual level, left him, once again, miles from that so much wanted redemption, in order to save a career at risk of collapsing.

He will have conscience of that himself, more than anybody else. He knows that he was out of focus in the extremely poor picture of Restelo's match and he surely might have guessed, that, in the following days, he will face the fury of all the "butchers" that want to throw him to the cross, making of him the sole responsible for the Lions' draw - and the consequent loss of two points in the fight for the national league title.

For many, he can be the perfect "scape goat" for Sporting's missed step in the round that closed the first half of the League. However, a deeper analysis of the collective display of the team will deny that without much effort.

Worrying was, in fact, the lack of quality and of competence on the offensive construction of the game and on its transitions. The strange "virus" that jailed Sporting's clarity in other crucial - and frustrating - moments this season (namely in the successive defeats against Benfica and Spartak Moscow) was reactivated. With half of the League ahead, the inertia in the attacking movements needs an urgent repair.

In the aftermath of the goalless draw in Restelo, Paulo Bento said that Sporting was better with 10 than with 11 players. It is a fact. As it is also true to say that the team was better - more aggressive and turned towards a more balanced game - when it had more of its homemade resources on the pitch (Miguel Veloso and Pereirinha).

----------------------------------------

Glad to see that some journalists in our country do realise what is our current problem and do not look only at the "gossipy" intrigues.

Didn't Sporting go offside like 17 times or something crazy like that?

That right there shows the offense is not in sync.
