Oliveira to be new Portugal manager

Antonio Oliveira is set to take over as coach of Portugal for the second time, replacing Humberto Coelho who resigned after the country's semi-final exit at Euro 2000.

The Portuguese sports newspaper Record reported on Wednesday that Gilberto Madail, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, will officially announce the decision during the next 48 hours.

In his previous spell as national boss, Oliveira guided Portugal to Euro 96, where they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage. He has also won two League championships at Porto.

Madail is expected to announce the decision after speaking with his technical committee. Although there is some resistance within the committee to Oliveira's appointment, it is expected that he will receive majority approval.

Personally I think it's a great decision. Afterall, the man does know what excellence is all about having coached FCP!

Personally I don't like the choice...He's coached the select team already and got us nothing playing a conservative game. Under Umberto the select team played an open game and got us great results.

Also the FPF is too damn political, that's the reason Umberto left. I mean the guy does an outstanding job and they still critiqued him.

As for me being the official waterboy I would gladly accept the job. I can also be the miracle spray man that comes to field when a player is injured sprays him and within seconds the player is bouncing and running.

Pila, perhaps you can be my assistant, you know be the ball boy or something...

GameRod are you psychic or something?? I had that same dream just the other night...except it wasn't Nuno Gomes I injured but Baia!

Some young blood will eventually make the top national squad for 2004. I'd say that for WC2002 if we make it, the squad will stay the same, maybe with the exception of the Defense and Bento. Also you can bet of FERNANDO MEIRA making the squad!

I don't like conservative coaches, and Oliveira is in this mode. I don't know if he carries the respect that Umberto had.

And the only people calling Umberto a BOBO were some of the Portistas who were not happy with the select team coach being a Benfiquista! But even they were proven wrong as the guy did everything he could to win Euro.
