Olimpico ban for Lazio Friday 10 December, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lazio’s next match in Europe will be played behind closed doors as a result of racist behaviour.

UEFA have today dished out the punishment following the actions of their fans during the tie against Partizan Belgrade on November 25.

UEFA's control and disciplinary body took the step after some supporters took part in racist abuse.

The club have also been slapped with the stadium ban following crowd disturbances during the same game – including the throwing of missiles and flares.

Lazio won’t serve the suspension this season as the club have already been knocked out of the UEFA Cup.

The sentence will carry over until the capital outfit next qualify for the UEFA Cup or the Champions’ League.

Lazio, who have now been penalised three times for racism offences, will have until midnight on Monday to make an appeal.

Meanwhile, Partizan have been handed a £3,500 fine after some of their followers threw flares in the 2-2 draw.

UEFA had already closed the Stadio Olimpico for two games this year after a Roma fan threw an object at referee Anders Frisk.

Funny that Real Madrid only got fines from much worse fan behaviour...typical UEFA double standards.

Not that it's any kind of defence. This thing has got to stop.

Stadiums belong to football.

That's because it was apparently Real's first offence and our third one. :( I hope that teaches the racist "fans" a lesson but there isn't a big chance for that, probably they will be back with a vengeance. The club and the police need to do something to prevent that.

Yeah, that's what they said. But it's only due to the new-found sensitivity about racism in Spanish football. It's not like the monkey-noises haven't happened at Bernabeu for years....Real Madrid has just been a holy cow for UEFA becuase of the huge marketing value, that's why their fans' actions haven't been punished before.

But, again, that's not a defense for us. Those monkey-noises happen at Olimpico and they shouldn't. Our punishment is deserved.

for Real, it was the first offence of racial abuse taken to observation from the supporters. for Lazio's case, it was the third time after the eagles were warned 2 times previously. Leave it to a romanista to support conspiracy theories. :googly:

anyway, i'm confident that the ban will be overturned.
