I think Gremio has what it takes to win, but hey, with all this time between the last stages and now, who knows?

Good luck to both teams, and may the best side win. :)

I actually like Olimpia's chances they have been solid throughout. It will be close but the Paraguayans to advance on PKs.

Olimpia Hosts Luizao-less Gremio

07/10/2002.

Olimpia plays host to Gremio in Asuncion, Paraguay, this Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores semifinal match. Both clubs are seeking their third Libertadores titles, but one of these fine clubs will have to give way in the semis.

Over two months ago, Olimpia knocked off defending champion Boca Juniors in the quarterfinals thanks in large part to a Cristian Alberto Traverso own-goal in Buenos Aires which allowed the Paraguayan club a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 aggregate advantage victory.

But Nery Pumpido and his men will insist their presence in the semifinals is not the result of chance as they can cite the fact that they won their group before blowing through Cobreloa in the round of 16 and then upsetting Boca.

Olimpia will look to employ speed as they go for goals in the comfort of Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asuncion to alleviate the pressures of next week's return leg in Porto Alegre.

Gremio, meantime, are facing a little bit of drama heading into Wednesday's clash. World Cup medal-winner Luizao will not be joining Gremio for the tie. The striker skipped Monday's training session and has asked to be released from his contract while he seeks options abroad.

The 26-year old has been linked with Hertha BSC of Germany, Reggina of Italy and Espanyol of Spain. Of course, Gremio do not want to give up their 26-year old without a fight and have refused to release Luizao for the moment despite his meager one goal, which came in the 4-0 round-of-16 romp over River Plate, in six Libertadores matches.

The added scoring burden will fall onto the shoulders of Rodrigo Mendes, while Fabio Baiano looks set to deputize in Luizao's absence.

Gremio dispatched River Plate in the round of 16 and then Uruguayan club Nacional in the QFs to reach the semifinals.

PROBABLE LINEUPS:
OLIMPIA: Tavarelli (GK), Isasi, Cáceres, Zelaya, Da Silva; Quintana, Enciso, Orteman, Córdoba; Benítez, Baez.
Technical Director: Nery Pumpido

GREMIO: Eduardo Martini (GK); Claudiomiro. Anderson Polga, Roger; Anderson Lima, Fernando, Tinga, Zinho Pedrinho; Fabio Baiano, Rodrigo Mendes.
Technical Director: Tite

Olimpia 3 - Gremio 2 FINAL

Xcellent victory for the guaranies but I am not sure if it will be enough to withstand the all out attack that they will surely face in Brasil.

Orteman scored twice for Olimpia and "Peque" Benitez wrap it up while Anderson Lima and Rodrigo Mendes, the leading scorer of the Libertadores, did the damage for the Brasilians.

Olimpia Blasts Gremio

07/11/2002.

Sergio Orteman's two goals helped Olimpia to a 3-2 win at home over Gremio in the first phase of this Copa Libertadores semifinal.

However, the home side's strategy to attack from the opening whistle was soon neutralized by a tight and well-organized Gremio defense.

While Nery Pumpido's men tried to solve the visitors' defense, Tinga, Fernando and Zinho were free to raid on the opposite end. But it was an Anderson Lima free kick that beat Taverelli in the 13th minute to give Gremio a 1-0 lead.

Giving up the first goal was not how Olimpia hoped to begin the evening, but eventually they found their stride enough to equalize before the end of the half.

Orteman tied things up in Asuncion in the 28th minute when he headed home, and 11 minutes into the second frame the Uruguayan put Olimpia ahead with his brace.

Gremio could not contain the speed and power of their hosts, and in the 63rd minute Miguel Benitez made things 3-1 when his quickness freed him to put an impressive goal past Eduardo.

Olimpia drifted back into a shell with the two-goal cushion, which allowed the Brazilian club to pull one back in the game's late stages. Rodrigo Mendes got Gremio's second with his head five minutes from time but Olimpia held on for the big win.

The return leg is in Porto Alegre on July 17th.

SCORING:
GRE - Lima (13)
OLI - Orteman (28)
OLI - Orteman (56)
OLI - Benitez (63)
GRE - Rodrigo Mendes (85)

LINEUPS:
OLIMPIA: Tavarelli (GK); Nestor Isasi, Julio Cesar Caceres, Nelson Zelaya, Henrique Da Silva; Sergio Orteman (Esteche, 74), Julio Cesar Enciso, Victor Quintana, Gaston Cordoba (Estigarribia, 69), Miguel Angel Benitez (Caballero, 88) and Richart Baez.

GREMIO: Eduardo (GK); Claudiomiro, Anderson Polga, Roger, Anderson Lima, Pedrinho (Grafite, 79), Fernando (Adriano, 64), Tinga, Zinho, Rodrigo Mendes and Fabio Baiano (Rodrigo Fabri, 70).

Well done Olimpia !!!!

Orteman was very impressive!

Orteman kicked some serious arse in the first match. Colocolo, do you know whether he's actually Paraguayan? What's his nationality?

Excellent forward. :) Orteman and Enciso were the core of Olimpia, and Gremio will have to sweat a couple of pints to go past them.

Gremio tries to sneak into the final

Olimpia and Gremio will kick-off their second semi-final leg of the 2002 Copa Libertadores on Wednesday evening in the Estadio Olímpico Monumental of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Olimpia was victorious in the first leg, but gave up two away goals in the process. That end result could spell doom for Olimpia. Since both teams are vying for their 3rd Copa Libertadores trophy, expect their players to leave it all on the pitch come game time.

LATEST TEAM NEWS:
Gremio:
Gremio was just booted out of the Brazilian Copa dos Copa dos Campeões (Champions' Cup) by Sao Paulo last Saturday. So Gremio will like to save face and move on to the finals of the Libertadores. All of Brazil will be rooting for them, as Sao Caetano is awaiting Gremio in the final round. First the Selecao won the World Cup, now an all Brazilian Libertadores final round. Just what the Futbol gods in Brazil ordered.

Olimpia:
Olimpia lost to Paraguayan rivals 12 de Octubre on Sunday, by the score of 3-1. Of course preparing for this upcoming match was a bigger priority for Olimpia, but still the loss must leave a bad taste for the whole organization.

WHO IS HOT
Gremio:
This position is currently open to any brave Gremio player that can handle the heat. Please refer to the "Who is Not" section for Gremio.

Olimpia:
During the first leg, Olimpia was lead by Sergio Orteman. Orteman scored a brace for the Paraguayan squad and with Gremio only needing a tie to advance, Olimpia coach Nery Pumpido has promised to keep Olimpia looking for scores. With Orteman on fire, this might be an easy task to accomplish.

WHO IS NOT
Gremio:
Rodrigo Mendes is the leading goal scorer in the Copa Libertadores. However, Gremio has been cursed, as Mendes won't be able to play due to an injury to his left thigh. This will be a huge blow to Tite, who had already lost Luizao due to looking for a nice payday in Europe. Gremio might not be playing the beautiful style that most Brazilians are used to.

Olimpia:
The defense has given up 5 goals in their last two matches. If the bleeding doesn't stop, Olimpia might be looking forward to earn a spot in the 2003 edition and remember an opportunity lost in 2002.

PROBABLE LINEUPS
GREMIO: Eduardo; Claudiomiro, Polga, Roger, Anderson Lima; Pedrinho, Tinga, Fernando, Zinho; Fabio Baiano, Grafite

OLIMPIA: Ricardo Tavarelli; Nestor Isasi, Julio Cesar Caceres, Nelson Zelaya, Henrique Da Silva; Victor Quintana, Sergio Orteman, Julio Cesar Enciso, Gaston Cordoba; Miguel Angel Benitez, Richart Baez
