Confederation Cup: USM Alger 1-1 AS Marsa (Tunisia)

USM Alger could only manage a tie at home today against Tunisian side AS Marsa in the third round of the African Confederations Cup. Although USMA dominated the first half, the team fell behind 1-0 after 41 minutes thanks to a goal from AS Marsa's Moroccan striker Hiréche. For a while it seemed that AS Marsa's defend-only strategy was going to pay off but a late a Hocine Achiou goal in the 90th minute gave fans hope for the return leg. The two teams will meet again in two weeks time with the winner progressing to the group stage.

USM Alger: Abdouni - Doghmani, Zeghdoud, Meftah - Achiou, Djahnine (Doucouré), Dziri, Metref, Haddou - Eneramo, Benchergui (Belkheir)

Yeah it looks like its going to be a wasted season for us on the African level. I was really hoping that this year would be the one when we won the Champions League after 2 years of getting close but it wanst meant to be. However, we won the Algerian league so we'll get another try next year.

USMA 1-2 MC Alger

USM Alger's recent form of bad results continued today with a 2-1 loss to local rivals MC Alger. USMA started off strong with a goal in the 10th minute by Billel Dziri, who headed in a cross. However, MC Alger equalied 16 minutes later off a corner when an unmarked Nouredine Deham tapped in the ball into the net. Deham went on to score the game winner in the 60th minute with a long-range shot from 30 metres out beating an out stretched Merouane Abdouni. The result does not change the standings with USMA still first and MC Alger still 3rd. However, USMA's lead at the top is down to just 7 points with 5 games to play.

Menad Quits As Coach

USM Alger's coach Djamel Menad resigned as the head coach of the team after the 2-1 defeat to city rivals MC Alger. Menad only took the reigns of the club earlier this year, and he has not produced good results. However, with just 5 more games left, USMA are in good shape to win their 3rd championship in 4 years.

USMA 2-1 ASO Chlef

USM Alger took a closer step to winning its 5th championship with a 2-1 away win over ASO Chlef. The home side opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Senegalese striker Pape Latyr N'Diaye scored his 3rd goal of the season. However, USMA equalized nine minutes later through Rabie Benchergui, his 5th goal of the season. It seemed like ASO Chlef would take control of the game, when Nigerian Michael Eneramo picked up 2nd yellow card. However, the game remained deadlocked and in the dying moments 21-year old Hocine Metref scored the game winner for USMA. The win, along with a JS Kabylie loss, means that USMA have a 10 point advantage with just 4 games left to be played.

USMA: Belmellat - Hamdoud, Besseghir, Deghmani, Haddou - Achiou, Djahnine, Ghazi, Metref - Benchergui (Doucouré 44’), Eneramo
Coach: AKSOUH, Mustapha

USMA 1-1 AS Marsa (Tunisia)

USM Alger's quest for their first African Cup will have to wait another year as they were eliminated by Tunisia's AS Marsa. Both teams came into the game with different strategies following the 1-1 draw in Alger. The beginning of the game saw USM Alger attacking relentlessly in hopes of getting the all-important away goal. It seemed like their work paid off 20 minutes in when Malian striker Mintou Doucoure scored a shot from the edge of the penalty box, but the goal was waved off for off-side. The Tunisian side replied a few minutes later when Moroccan striker Khalid Harish broke the off-side trap and was faced with a one-on-one chance with the goalie. However, his shot was just wide of the near side post.

Just before the half USMA were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area. Billel Dziri's shot was mishandled by the Tunisian goalkeeper and Mintou Doucoure put it away to give the Algerians the upperhand. The scored remained that way until the 70th minute when a Billel Dziri turnover in the middle of the field gave AS Marsa a quick counter attack which Harish converted with a header from a cross.

In the dying moments of the game a fight broke out between the two teams. It all started when USM Alger were on the attack and seemed like they were going to get a good chance when a Tunisian official on the side threw another ball onto the field forcing the referee to blow his whistle. Dziri rushed over to the official and a melee broke out between the two sides. In the end, a player from either side received a red card and the game ended tied 1-1. In penalties, USMA's Mohamed Hamdoud missed his penalty, while all others scored, giving the victory to AS Marsa, 5-4. AS Marsa will now move on to the group stage of the tournament.

USMA 4-1 USM Blida

USM Alger won their 5th Algerian championship today by beating USM Blida 4-1 at home. The red and black started off the scoring through Billel Dziri in the 30th minute when his well placed free kick beat the Blida goalkeeper. Just before the half, USMA would add another goal through Malian attacker Mintou Doucoure, who tapped in a Moulay Haddou pass. In the second half, things continued that way when in the 57th minute Moulay Haddou headed in a cross to give USMA a 3-0 advantage. USM Blida would reduce the deficit when Zmit would beat the USMA goalkeeper with a beautifally taken strike from outside the box. Billel Dziri would wrap the game up for USMA in the 90th minute when he broke free from the off side pass and slotted his shot past the goalkeeper, scoring his 11th goal of the season. The win gives USMA 61 points from 27 games, a 10 point cushion over second place JS Kabylie with just 3 games left, assuring themselves of first place and a their 5th championship.

USMA 2-1 NA Hussein Dey

USM Alger continued their winning ways in the Algerian league beating 4th ranked NA Hussein Dey 2-1. However, USMA would take the lead again 16 minutes later, when Rabie Benchergui would score his 6th goal of the season from a header. USMA 1-2 MC Oran

With the championship already assured, USM Alger played a number of their younger players in their Week 29 matchup against MC Oran. MC Oran took control of the game from the start creating a number of chances to score. They opened the scoring in the 30th minute through midfielder Redouane Benzerga. Benzerga would add another one from the penalty spot just 12 minutes later, giving the home side a 2-0 advantage going into the break. In the second half, the game was more even but USMA still could not find the net until the 81st minute when Mohamed Samir Khemissa would score from a beautifally taken free kick, his second goal in as many games. The game a little physical towards the end when USMA defender Mohamed Hamdoud picked up a red card for a mistimed tackle. The score would remain that way until the final whistle.

USMA: Zemamouche, Hamdoud, Siyahi (Belhadi 67’), Meftah, Khemissa (Hamraoui 86’), Zeghdoud, Metref, Ali Hadji, Belkheïr (Kab 81’), Eneramo, Doucouré

Mercato 2005

USM Alger have announced the signing of two players from Guinean club Fello Star. The first is 20-year old goalkeeper Abdoulaye Souma, who put up a huge performance against Algerian club JS Kabylie in the Champions League earlier this year, saving 2 penalties in the return leg. The other player is 19-year old striker Ibrahima Camara. One of the players is unlikely to play in the first half of the season with teams only allowed 3 international players and USMA already possessing Malian Mintou Doucoure and Nigerian Michael Eneramo. Eneramo will most likely return to Tunisian club Esperence De Tunis during the winter break.

USMA 3-1 CA Batna

USM Alger's new campaign got off to a bad start as the defending champions fell 3-1 away to newly promoted CA Batna. USMA were missing a number of regulars due to contract disputes, injuries and player qualifications. CA Batna got off to a flying start with a goal in the 15th minute from Ghenaia. The score remained that way until halftime. In the second half, CA Batna kept on the pressure and it paid off in the 62nd minute when Nahnah gave the home side a 2-0 lead. With USMA desperate for goals, coach Mustapha Aksouh brought in some attackers in the likes of Malian Mintou Doucoure and Mohamed Amine Belkheir. The move paid off as USMA earned a penalty in the 79th minute, converted by defender Haddou Moulay. However, USMA could not reduce the deficit and CA Batna even added a consolation goal in the 81st minute, from the penalty spot.

USMA: Belmellat - Deghmani, Zidane, Meftah, Haddou - Achiou, Djahnine (Doucouré 62'), Belkaid (Belkheir 63'), Dziri, Metref - Eneramo

Fergani Named Coach

USM Alger have announced the appointment of Ali Fergani as the new head coach of the team, replacing temporary caretaker Mustapha Aksouh. Fergani recently resigned as head coach of the Algerian national team after failing to lead them to the 2006 African Cup. USMA were looking to get a foreign coach but could not agree to terms with a number of French coaches. Fergani should have no problem leading the team, having already coached them just two years ago where he lead them to the semi-finals of the African Champions League.
