BAGGIES WRAP UP COX DEAL

New West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo has completed his first signing with Swindon striker Simon Cox moving to the Hawthorns in a £1.9 million deal.

The 22-year-old has penned a two-year contract, plus a further two years' option in the club's favour, after passing a medical.

Swindon will receive a guaranteed £1.5m from the deal with a further £400,000 due in performance-related add-ons.

Cox was the joint top scorer in all four English divisions with 29 league goals alongside Bristol Rovers' Rickie Lambert last season.

He netted 32 times in total for the League One outfit including three hat-tricks against Hartlepool, Scunthorpe and Northampton.

Cox was watched on several occasions by Albion staff and his goals almost single-handedly saved Town from the drop as they finished in 15th place - just four points above the relegation zone.

The Reading-born striker joined his home town club at the age of nine and progressed through the ranks to make his senior debut in the Royals' League Cup victory at Luton in September 2005.

He found first-team chances hard to come by at the Madejski Stadium and spent time on loan at Brentford and Northampton.

Following a subsequent successful loan spell at Swindon, where he fired eight goals in 19 games, Cox made a permanent move to the County Ground in January 2008.

Cox boasts an impressive ratio of almost a goal every other game, having scored 50 times in 119 career appearances, including 15 as a substitute.

Baggies confirm Mulumbu deal

Youssouf Mulumbu has joined West Brom from Paris Saint-Germain for £175,000.

Skysports.com broke news of the deal earlier this week and now the Baggies have confirmed an accord has been struck.

The 22-year-old joined the Baggies on loan in January and has put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal, with an option of a further year.

Mulumbu made a total of six appearances during last season after injuries disrupted his spell at the Hawthorns.

New boss Roberto Di Matteo said: "Youssouf didn't get an extended run last year due to his injuries but he did well when he was in the team.

"I saw him play for West Brom last season and I'm delighted he's now joined us on a permanent basis.

"He could be the player we're looking for in defensive midfield. He's still young and I'm sure he will get better the more games he plays for us."

"We have signed Reuben as a squad member and everyone is going to have to be patient as we slowly introduce him."

Baggies complete deal for Mattock

West Brom have signed England Under-21 left-back Joe Mattock from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old, who handed in a transfer request last week, has signed a three-year deal at The Hawthorns with an option for a fourth year.

He made his Foxes debut at the age of 16 and has already made 73 appearances.

Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo said: "He's a young, talented, English left-back who's got plenty of Championship experience. He was keen to join us."

Joe Mattock is a brilliant signing. I seriously think he is going to be the next contender to Ashley Cole for England. He gets up and down that line all day, he is quick and great in the tackle. He flies in and wins the ball a lot, but what makes him stand out is that ever since he has broken into the Leicester squad, he has been consistently good.

M-R you really believe we got a future England LB ?? :hopeful: And he cost just around £1.2 milions, exactly how I used to play in FM... I always replaced Robinson with Mattock in that position

Why can't Joe Mattock go onto that level? Leighton Baines is the only real quality leftback coming through and he wasn't as good as Mattock was at his age. Mattock hasn't really developed as much as many have hoped but hopefully he reaches his potential.

That, in a nutshell, is Mattock's downfall.

He was nothing short of excellent when he made his debut when he was 16. Defending very well, bombing forward taking on fullbacks and was a utter nuisance to the oppositions.

But then he got nationwide recognition, U21 call-up, and he started to believe his own hype and thought he was better than he actually is, and eventually he started to fade.

I still think he's a very talented player and I'm absolutely gutted that West Brom got him so cheaply, but nevertheless, he really has to pull his finger out and step up his game if he wants to play in the top flight, nevermind the national team.

Baggies seal Jara deal

West Brom have completed the signing of Gonzalo Jara in a £1.4million deal from Colo Colo.

The Baggies have been chasing the Chile international for much of the summer, with an agreement having been in the pipeline for some time.

They have now landed their man, with the versatile defender all set to finalise his move from South America.

He will require international clearance before officially signing for West Brom, though, and that process is set to rule him out of Wednesday's Carling Cup date with Rotherham and Saturday's Championship clash with Sheffield United.

"Gonzalo is an exciting, quick, technical and aggressive player," Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo told the club's official website.

"He's a Chile international and very versatile, which will give me good options.

"He's still young (at 24) and has a strong desire to achieve.

"Gonzalo wants to go to that next level and prove himself in Europe."
