Southampton seek to trump Spurs for Chelsea's Cole
tribalfootball.com - December 15, 2004

Southampton boss Harry Redknapp is chasing Chelsea playmaker Joe Cole.

The Daily Mail says Redknapp wants his former West Ham star on-loan for the second-half of the season and hopes to strike a deal with Chelsea similar to what he had for Alexei Smertin while with Portsmouth last season.

Tottenham are also chasing Cole and are prepared to offer £5 million for the England ace.

Southampton boss Redknapp wants 5 signings
By Ian Ferris - December 30, 2004

Southampton boss Harry Redknapp hopes to sign five players with the money he will get from selling England striker James Beattie.

Redknapp has already admitted he will reluctantly let Beattie go to fund a campaign to keep Saints in the Premiership.

"There is a long way still to go. We are in a relegation battle, it will be a struggle but hopefully we will get out of this," said Redknapp.

"We need to bring a couple of defenders in, a couple of midfield players and maybe even a frontman.

"We have lots of good kids and a great academy, but we've got to make sure we stay in the Premier League this season."

He added: "In an ideal world you would like to keep James Beattie, he is a top goalscorer and we will miss him. But we are not in an ideal world and we have to bring in a few players, it is the only way forward for us."

Mido linked with loan move
By Neil Vaughan for THEspursweb.com

ROMA striker Mido's agent has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Egyptian international in a loan deal.

Christophe Henrotay, the players agent confirmed that both Spurs and Southampton are battling it out for his clients signature.

Mido is currently unsettled at Roma and his agent claims that both clubs have made enquiries.

Yeah there are some possibilities with Mido, but at the moment it is very complicated because Roma paid a lot of money for Mido and he has not played a lot," Henrotay told skysports.com.

"We are looking for a loan and it is true that Southampton are looking for some solution.

"I have spoken to the chairman Rupert Lowe and he knows the player and he tried to bring him to the club before."

"Tottenham are also keen and (sporting director) Frank Arnesen knows all about Mido from his time in Holland.

"Mido wants to be playing football and he would go to a club where he will be playing."

Pamarot's "No" to Saints
By Neil Vaughan for THEspursweb.com

Spurs full back Noe Pamarot has declared that he is not interested in a move to Southampton.

The French defender, who joined Spurs in the summer under Santini, had been rumoured to be a target for Harry Redknapp after already securing the services of his son Jamie and Calum Davenport from Tottenham already.

However Pamarot has spoken out over the rumours saying, "I heard about that, but I don't want to go to Southampton."

The Macedonia international has been pushed further down the pecking order at Lazio following the arrival last week of Fabio Bazzani from Sampdoria.

Tottenham make improved bid for Forest's Reid
tribalfootball.com - January 26, 2005

Tottenham have made an improved bid for Nottingham Forest winger Andy Reid.

But they face competition from Southampton to sign him before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Spurs have come up with a deal based on appearances and success worth £4 million.

Forest want Reid, 22, for their Championship relegation fight but the player is desperate to move to the Premiership.

He was given a verbal assurance last August that he could go if a bigger club came in.

Phillips considers Saints future

Southampton striker Kevin Phillips will hold talks with chairman Rupert Lowe to determine his future at St Mary's.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Saints since their relegation from the Premiership in May.

Phillips' agent Jon Smith said: "Kevin is very happy there. We have to have those talks with Rupert.

"Kevin believes he is a Premiership player but by the same token he loves Southampton, the fans and was part of the team that went down."

Smith added: "It has been handled in the right way, Rupert will decide what he wants to do and I think something will happen in the next two or three weeks.

"Kevin wants to play Premiership football and feels he has 15 to 20 goals a season in him.

"He's 31 and would like to continue playing in the Premiership.

"But he doesn't want to be seen leaving them when when they've just gone down. It's difficult but it will be resolved in about two to three weeks."

Former England International, Steve Stone, now 33 and released by Pompey is likely to join old boss Harry at Southampton. Wigan have also shown interest in the winger, but I think he is bit too slow these days for the premiership.

EARNSHAW TURNS DOWN SAINTS
Unsettled West Brom striker Robert Earnshaw is holding out for a move to a
Premiership club after rejecting a switch to Southampton.

The 24-year-old Wales hitman is upset at his lack of first-team action at
The Hawthorns, and has been further angered by Baggies boss Bryan Robson
giving him a DVD outlining what he needs to work on to improve his all-round
game.

Premiership quartet Birmingham, Everton, Portsmouth and Wigan have all been
linked with Earnshaw - but Saints boss George Burley has been first to put a
deal on the table, offering £1m in cash plus midfield duo Nigel Quashie and
David Prutton.

Albion chief Robson did not even get a chance to ponder the offer as
Earnshaw does not want to drop into the Championship, where Saints are
languishing in 14th place and lie seven points adrift of the playoffs.

But Burley is still keen to do some business with the Baggies in January's
transfer window, and wants to sign out-of-favour midfielder Richard Chaplow
on loan.

Robson may well be happy to sanction the former Burnley playmaker's exit on
a temporary basis, as he feels he has bags of potential but has yet to give
him an extended run in the Albion team as they battle to survive in the top
flight.

Southampton boss ready to sign Spurs striker Rasiak outright
tribalfootball.com - February 9, 2006

Southampton boss George Burley has confirmed he intends to sign on-loan Tottenham striker Grzegorz Rasiak permanently in the summer.
Saints had hoped to land Rasiak during the January transfer window, but Spurs were unwilling to release him while Mido was on African Nations Cup duty in Egypt.

"We can only sign him on loan now but we have agreed to sign him in the summer," said Burley.

Southampton swoop for Tottenham striker Rasiak
tribalfootball.com - February 9, 2006

Southampton have signed Tottenham striker Grzegorz Rasiak on loan until the end of the season with a view to a £2m permanent move.
Saints head coach George Burley also signed Leeds midfielder Jermaine Wright on an initial month's loan.

Poland international Rasiak, 27, will again join forces with Burley, who he played under at Derby last season.

Wright also previously played under Burley at Ipswich before joining Leeds in June 2004.

Burley said: "I'm delighted we have got him. He's a goalscorer who will give the squad a lift.

"He's a current Polish international who is looking forward to playing in the World Cup.

"He's got a good pedigree. He got 19 goals for me at Derby last season and then moved to Spurs for £2m.

"He has outstanding ability. He's a good goalscorer, strong in the air and his touch is very good."

Rasiak made four Premiership starts in a total of nine appearances at White Hart Lane.

Spurs boss Martin Jol said: "He was a player we needed time with in an ideal world but this is the Premiership and time is a luxury we don't have.

"I have talked with him and I know he's unhappy about his time with us, and that's to be expected.

"I'm disappointed it hasn't worked out better but it's right that both sides now move on."

Rasiak could make his Saints debut at Championship leaders Reading on Friday night.

He told Saints website: "I'm happy to be working with George Burley again, wherever he's gone he has created great teams.

"I like his vision of the game and he likes to play attacking football.

"It was hard for me at Tottenham because I didn't play much and I need to be playing regularly ready for the World Cup."

Saints complete £2million deal for Spurs striker Rasiak

Southampton have completed the £2million signing of striker Grzegorz Rasiak from Tottenham.

The 27-year-old Poland international joined Saints on loan in February with an agreement to make the move permanent when the transfer window reopened, and has now signed a four-year deal at St Mary's.

Rasiak has hit four goals in 12 games since George Burley brought him to the south coast following a frustrating spell at White Hart Lane.

He failed to find the net in nine league and cup appearances after Spurs paid Derby £2million for his services last summer.

'I have enjoyed myself here and I am happy to be here,' Rasiak told the club's official website.

'I think I have done okay so far and the team is playing much better. It is looking good for next season.

'I am very happy here and want to stay longer - and it has been good preparation for the World Cup which I am now looking forward to.'
