Villarreal have agreed a deal to sign Argentine starlet Damian Escudero from Velez Sarsfield.

Escudero has accepted a five-year contract with Villarreal, who will be competing in next season's UEFA Champions League.
The midfielder is still to undergo a medical with the Spanish club, while the fee is reported to be in the region of 5million euros (£4million).
The 21-year-old had made 70 first-team appearances for Velez and was also a member of the Argentina squad which won the Under-20 World Cup last year.

With Escudero arriving at Villarreal, Leandro Somoza has been allowed to link up with Velez on loan next season.

Midfielder expresses his joy

Escudero: “I feel ready to make the leap into Europe”

Damián Ariel Escudero has expressed his joy after being officially presented as Villarreal’s latest signing at the Villarreal Academy. “I had other offers, but when Villarreal expressed an interest, I didn’t have to think about it. In Argentina the Spanish league is followed keenly and one is always hoping to get a transfer to here”, explained the midfielder who will form part of the Villarreal outfit for the next five seasons. “Villarreal is one of the clubs that appeals most because of its ambitions. I feel ready to make the leap into Europe”, he added.

‘Pichi’ – a nickname given to him by his father, who was also a footballer – described how he saw himself as a player: “I am a midfielder who can attack and defend, even though I feel more comfortable creating the play in attack and along the wings. I enjoy dribbling with the ball and shooting at goal whenever I can”.

The former Vélez Sársfield player added that in the event of him being unable to hold down a regular place in the ‘Submarine’ squad he would look at other options. “I know that here it will be difficult to have a place and if that’s the case I would try to go on loan so I can carry on playing and demonstrate my capabilities”, said.

In the other side, club president Fernando Roig welcomed the midfielder to the club and added: “This is a very satisfactory move for us because Escudero is a left sided player with tremendous potential, and only just 21-years-old.”
