McMahon sets out to woo Middlesbrough

Steve McMahon has used his network of overseas contacts to set up the prospect of a glamour challenge match between Perth Glory and star-studded English Premier League club Middlesborough.

Boro have risen to sixth in the premiership on the back of the form of the likes of England teenager Stewart Downing, Australian international keeper Mark Schwarzer and Dutch striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink - and their continued success will be crucial to Glory's chances of hosting the match in July.

McMahon, Glory's new coach, said Middlesborough had expressed an interest in travelling to Perth.

"I've been working hard on that and hopefully it will come to fruition," he said. "It's not 100 per cent sure by any means but it's got a decent chance of happening if they qualify for Europe."

Should Middlesborough fail to finish at least sixth in the Premier League, therefore missing out on a UEFA Cup place, they would spend their pre-season competing in the Intertoto Cup - a European qualifying tournament - instead of taking up the Perth option.

Former Liverpool midfielder McMahon now has his fingers crossed that the Teesside club can hold their place.

"It would be fantastic for Perth," he said. "It would be great for the supporters and everybody at the club to have a Premier League team here."

The former England international has 11 of his 15 players at his disposal, with David Tarka still recovering from injury and Australian international Simon Colosimo, Japanese winger Hiroyuki Ishida and Serbia and Montenegro youth goalkeeper Milan Jovanic yet to arrive in Perth.

McMahon's priority is to sign another goalkeeper and a striker, though Australian forward Joel Porter, playing for Hartlepool United in England's League One, has been ruled out. The former Sydney Olympic player is under contract and Glory would not be willing to pay a transfer fee.

I'd imagine Colosimo will probably slot into that anchor-defensive role ala a Makelele, and you've still got five spots left open. I won't be surprised if a couple of Div2 players from England make their way out here because of McMahon's contacts.

One of them might be Aussie Joel Porter at Hartlepool.

PERTH Glory has re-signed Jamie Coyne, who formed an integral part of Perth's back-to-back NSL Championship squads.

Coyne has been plaing with Dutch first division outfit ADO Den Haag since the final NSL season, but he has signed to play with the Glory in the inaugural Hyundai A-League season.

Glory coach Steve McMahon now has only four more spots on the roster to fill.

The Glory played their first game today in the new era with a 4-0 friendly win over Fremantle City. Apparently it was an impressive performance. The Argentine showed brilliance also in the small run he got.

Finally the Serbian goalkeeper has arrived.

Serbia and Montenegro Under 19 international goalkeeper Milan Jovanic has arrived in Perth to join his Glory teammates in their preparation for the inaugural season of the A-League.

Jovanic was snapped up by Glory although the management or coaching staff had not seen him play. He was signed on the recommendation of Serbia-based former Australia national coach Frank Arok.

"We have taken Milan on the recommendation of Frank Arok," confirmed Perth technical director, Mitch D’Avray.

"Some people may say it is difficult taking on someone we have not seen play but Frank is obviously someone whose judgement you have to respect."

"We are looking forward to meeting Milan, he is only 19 and he will be our number two goalkeeper. We are hoping to be able to make a decision on another goalkeeper by Tuesday."

"Milan is not coming here to sit on the substitutes’ bench but to force his way into the first team and show us he is a good goalkeeper."

"He is someone we believe is capable of taking on the number one shirt in the near future."

Its interesting how they say he will be the number two choice. If he is the youth goalkeeper of one of the best youth nations in the world, why can't he be number one choice?
