FIORENTINA have won the race to sign Portuguese
Euro 2000 star Nuno Gomes - paying a fee believed to
be worth around £13.3 million.

Nuno Gomes scored four times in this summers
European Championships, including a glorious strike
against eventual winners France in the semi-final.

Fiorentina have been undergoing a major rebuild
following the departure of both crowd hero Gabriel Batistuta and veteran manager
Giovanni Trapattoni.

New coach Fatih Terim, who took Galatasaray to Uefa Cup victory before moving
to the Florentine club, has been linked with a number of forwards, but has now
teamed up Nuno Gomes with his international team-mate and felllow Fiorentina
star Rui Costa.

The turmoil at Fiorentina does not end with the playing staff, or even the
management. Outspoken president Cecchi Gori has been under-fire from the
club's vociferous supporters for much of a largely disappointing season that saw
a failure to build on the success of the previous campaign.

may go some way to appeasing the dissident groups, along with news that Euro
2000 keeper of the tournament Francesco Toldo and Rui Costa will not be

Fatih Terim knows his job very well. And this transfer proves it. Fiorentina will play for the first three place in the Serie A. And I think they will be the 2nd.
