Any chance Djokovic drops the mic and retires if he beats Medvedev?
possibly... more likely Nole will take a break and then make a decision when he needs to start preparing for the Australian summer

Congratulations to Daniil Medvedev on his maiden Grand Slam victory... beats Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

looking forward, I would like to see Djokovic maintain his play and keep the no. 1 ranking until the end of the year to give him 7 year end no. 1 finishes

Congratulations to Medvedev, deserved victory - I like him as a player and person. Regarding Novaks recovery, I still think it's better than majority of top players - who knows how this match would turn out if it went to 5 sets. Mentally & emotionally it was too much for him. The doubles at Olympics was really unnecessary which was like a domino effect on his physical & mental aura. Despite all of that I think he set such high standard & expectation that it gets more headlines when he loses than when he wins a GS. If somebody offered to any tennis player guaranteed all 4 Grand Slam finals with 3 Wins before each season - doubt many would reject that. If anything positive, this will give him motivation for 10th Aus Open and simultaneously most GS titles. However I do think it will be easier for him to win at WImbledon & dare to say RG than hard court Grand Slams considering raise of Medvedev, Zverev and until recently Thiem.

Novak wins the Paris Masters beating Medvedev in the final 4-6, 6-3, 6-3... in so doing, he wins a record 37th Masters title... he also secures a record 7th year end no. 1 finish

as Tsitsipas said, there is no Big 3 anymore... there is only a Big One: Đoković

STAT OF THE DAY: NOVAK DJOKOVIC HAS NOW REACHED AT LEAST THE FINAL AT 50 OF THE LAST 100 MASTERS 1000 EVENTS HE’S PLAYED
Also 28 of the last 50, 43 of the last 75, 54 of the last 110…

Novak Djokovic is arguably the most decorated player in Masters 1000 history—although he’s currently tied for the record most career Masters 1000 titles, which he could change tomorrow, he’s the only man to have won all nine Masters 1000 events at least once in his career (and he’s won them all at least twice, too).

He also holds the record for most career Masters 1000 finals reached—he just reached his 54th at the Rolex Paris Masters today.

But his run to the final in Paris this week brings up yet another incredible stat in his already-incredible career: Djokovic has now reached AT LEAST the final at 50 of the last 100 Masters 1000 events he’s played.

He’s also reached at least the final at…
… 28 of the last 50 he’s played,
… 43 of the last 75 he’s played,
… and 54 of the last 110 he’s played.

However you slice it, the Serb has been one of the last two men standing at roughly half of every Masters 1000 event he’s played for almost 15 years now, an incredible feat given anywhere between 48 and 96 players start in every one of these draws.

And after clinching a record seventh year-end No. 1 finish in Paris on Saturday, Djokovic can make even more history in the French capital on Sunday—if he wins the title, it’ll be his record 37th career Masters 1000 title, breaking a tie with Rafael Nadal.

MOST CAREER MASTERS 1000 TITLES (since 1990)
36: Novak Djokovic
36: Rafael Nadal

28: Roger Federer
17: Andre Agassi
14: Andy Murray

Nole's CV as of today:

  • 20 Grand Slam titles and counting
  • a record of 37 masters titles and counting
  • a record 6 masters titles won in the one year
  • only player ever to have won all 9 masters tournaments which he has done twice... no other player has won more than 7
  • a record of 7 year end no. 1 finishes and counting
  • most weeks ranked no. 1 in the world at 345 weeks and counting (Federer is on 310, Nadal 209)... across both men's and women's tours, only Steffi Graf has more weeks at number one with 377
  • 5 ATP Tour Finals victories and counting (behind only Federer's 6) --> Nadal has zero
  • only one of three men's players ever to have won all 4 Grand Slams in a row (with Rod Laver and Don Budge)
  • only men's player ever to win all four Grand Slams in a row on three different surfaces
  • only one of three men's players to win all four Grand Slams at least twice each (with Laver and Emerson) and the only one to do it in the open era
  • only men's player to have reached the final of each Grand Slam on at least 6 occasions each
  • one of two players in the Open era to win the first three Grand Slams in a calendar year (Laver)
  • one of two players to have won 3 Grand Slams in a calendar year on 3 separate occasions - 2011, 2015 and 2021 (Federer)
  • highest ever accrued ranking points in mid 2016 having been the holder of all four Grand Slams, the ATP Tour Finals, and a host of masters tournaments
  • undoubtedly, the player of the decade for 2010-2020 in what was a talent laden era with the Big 3, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo Wilfred Tsonga etc.
  • a positive H2H record against all major rivals throughout the era - Nadal, Federer, Murray, Wawrinka, Del Potro, Tsonga, Medvedev etc... interestingly, Djokovic is the player all the other Big 4 players have played most in matches between the Big 4 in their careers indicating that Djokovic was consistently competing and having to go through Nadal, Federer and Murray to achieve the above
  • a Davis Cup victory with a relative tennis minnow like Serbia
  • clearly one of the most clutch players the game has seen... and compare Nole's mental strength with that of Federer who has something like 23-24 match losses AFTER having match points to win including his infamous 40-15 trilogy against Djokovic
  • all of the above done entirely in the era of Federer and Rafa with Djokovic only starting to win after Federer and Rafa were already multiple GS winners --> Federer already had 16 GS titles in 2010 before Djokovic had won his second GS at the Oz Open
  • all of the above done with western fans and pundits and the media unabashedly against him... probably why Federer is such a mental midget --> during his peak, all his opponents rolled over for him (except Nadal at the French Open), the media kissed his a*+#, too soon the talk was Federer vs history, him wearing an embroidered '15' on a jacket after breaking Sampras' record etc., but he never faced adversity and prevailed... if anything, he was more likely to break down and cry

Anyone debating this is a hater. We see how Medvedev is getting treated by the 'superior Western Europeans'. As long as you're from Eastern Europe, you could be the most charismatic saint the world has ever seen (not saying Danil is btw :)) and they'd still cheer some autistic robot from the West against you.

**** 'm all though, Nole has proven to be not only the greatest tennis player of all time, but also one of the greatest athletes in any sport, period.

We'll see if he comes to the biggest jail in the world named Australia. Maybe someone will take out the Victorian dictator with sniper before that. Always thought those extreme measures were reserved for Balkan politicians, but oh boy have they proved me wrong here downunder... If not in Aus Open, then 21st GS will most likely be at Wimbledon or RG.

Ive said same thing as zverev . If Djokovic had grown up with the same training as Federer had as a youth in switzerland he wouldve started winning more slams at an earlier age . I also like how nadal and Federer have no interest in helping the lower ranked players earn a decent living while Djokovic is . Its probably due to all the easy draws that were given to them thoughout their career where Djokovic always had to fight against the system that was in favor of nadal and Federer . Djokovic pursuit of grand slam history at the us open and as the number 1 player in the world somehow drew Berrettini than zverev then medvedev imagine that

Let's not get carried away with "greatest athlete" just yet :D. There is a thread about this and I'm sure that Djokovic would be there as the GOAT of A SPORT....but, there are folks out there that were exceptional in multiple sports....that is why Jim Thorpe is usually at the top of the list when it comes to American athletes...

"Considered one of the most versatile athletes of modern sports, he won two Olympic gold medals in the 1912 Summer Olympics (one in classic pentathlon and the other in decathlon). He also played American football (collegiate and professional), professional baseball, and basketball."

I think Djokovic should be heavily considered since he played in an individual sport but its too hard to figure out too many great athletes in history of sport . Maybe first the argument should be which sport has the greatest athletes to play in it
