During the next two weeks the Norwegian Women's National team is scheduled to play two "friendly" matches vs. the U.S. and one against Canada. Two key players, Bente Nordby & Solveig Gulbrandsen, have been left off of the Norwegian squad and the WUSA Boston Breakers club of Norwegian player, Dagny Mellgren, has apparently refused to release her for these matches. Has there been anything in the Norwegian media about any of this?

So far all I have seen is the following two paragraphs posted at the "toppserien.com" website:

I know some Norwegian, but am not fluent and would appreciate some help to be sure that I understanding what was written. I think that this says that the Norwegian National team will travel to the U.S. without two of their most important players. Solveig Gulbrandsen was already "made free" (released?) because of personal reasons.

The second paragraph goes on to say that there has been a discussion with Bente Nordby about this. She has been with (the National Team) for many years and this has been a tough strain (load) and so a "decision has been reached"?? that she needs a breather to "back off" (take a break). Therefore she will not be with (the team) that goes to the USA, but she (something about coming back again in the future???).

På forhånd takk!

Heia Norge!!

I hadn't even heard about the friendlies, so I think it's safe to say there hasn't been much fuzz about this in the media :D

I'll translate the Norwegian stuff here.. too tired to worry about grammar, just direct translation, hope you'll be able to cope with that :D

"This means the NT travels to USA without two of their most important players. Gulbrandsen had already been given a leave for personal reasons.

- We've had a chat with Bente Nordby about it. She's been with the NT for many years, and had it's been straining for her, so we've decided she needs a breather. Therefore, she won't be coming along to the USA, but she'll still be with us in the future, says NT boss Åge Steen to toppserien.com"

Tusen Takk!

Thanks for the help Jinxter. I had a couple of chances to talk to Dagny Mellgren over the weekend, but I didn't think it was appropriate to ask her about Boston not releasing her for National Team duty since it was the club's decision and not her decision. If you do see this mentioned in the Norwegian media I would appreciate it you would post something about it.

On a side note, I also had a chance to meet Ragnhild Gulbrandsen who made the Boston Breaker travel squad for the first time this season. Ragnhild had surgery on her achilles heel in November and the recovery time has unfortunately been much slower than expected. Both Ragnhild and Boston's coach told me that they thought she would have to have more surgery in the off-season. :(

Sure thing, want me to post it here or in the women's footy section?
It might be best for you to post it in the "women's footy section" if you happen to find out any more information about Mellgren's situation. The main reason why I posted here in the first place was because I needed some "norsk hjelp." :)

Ragnhild Gulbrandsen

That's old news ;) Ragnhild Gulbrandsen was injured almost the whole last season in Trondheims/Ørn!
And she still managed to score something like 31 goals in "toppserien!?!?" Very impressive! Even though she could barely run, Ragnhild still looked very dangerous in the air during the 20 minutes or so that she played on Saturday against the San Diego Spirit.

Dagny Mellgren was indeed on hand for the game against Canada, and she scored a goal.
You can read my report of the game in the Women's forum.

I'd be interested to read a translation of what the Norwegian media or Toppserien have to say about this game.

Sure, if I see anything about it, I'll translate it..

When it comes to these games.. a few days ago there was a 3 sentence piece about the games in the other sports section.. was just a freak accident that I noticed it.. basically said:
"Today the Norwegian Woman NT travels to America to play USA and Canada."
That was all :D Not very high profile in Norwegian media.

Translated and sent solskjaer20 another article a few days ago as well, about Dagny Mellgren not being allowed to play USA.

Here's an article titled - Ganske irriterende that I just saw posted at http://www.toppserien.com:

- Ganske irriterende

Etter Canadas overraskende tidlige ledelse sørget USA-proffen for Norges viktige utlikningsmål like før pause.
