Who do you think is the most talented player who flopped.

For me in order

1. Ortega - Possibly the best dribbler since Maradona. Had an amazing run in wc98 even though he hardly get praised for it. His career went downhill ever since the world cup

2. Quaresma - He isn't exactly playing according to potential

3. Riquelme - He should still be in europe setting the world on fire. You can blame it on home sickness but I call it flopping

Recoba although it's hard to define what is a flop. His talent was awesome. Should have been right up there with the best names automatically. A game he played for Uruguay in the last Copa America sums him up a bit. It was against one of the stronger sides in South America can't remember which team now. He was running the show playing really well in the first half clearly the best player on the pitch by a mile. Then Uruguay runs out for the second half. No Recoba to be seen with them. Injuries probably played their part too.

Another would be Miccoli. Done some great things in Serie A but with the talent he has could have been so much better.

There are plenty of others.

Aimar was a bigger flop than Riquelme. A lot of people said years ago that Aimar was better than him (even Jorge Valdano), and he really didn´t show this with the years.

You can say whatever but Riquelme at least did great at Villarreal (in Europe).

I think this thread is more to address talented players that never made it to live up to their true potential, instead of players that struggled in certain teams or leagues.

In that case, Francesco Coco. Hailed as the next Maldini and was heir to his throne at Milan at left-back.

Was told to wait a few seasons before coming through, but he didn't have the patience and decided to join Inter.

Look at him now. Retired at the age of 30 to join showbiz.

Argentinean new golden generation (Saviola, Aimar, Riquelme, D'Alessandro) flopped in Europe pretty spectacularly and yet there's no doubt they were all very talented.

Denilson is maybe worth mentioning too. And Recoba.

Ahh Denilson. He should be the 'winner' because he has the greatest amount of talent amongst the lot being mentioned.
Dunno about that. He's maybe the greatest dribbler ever but overall he's IMO less talented than Saviola, Aimar or Riquelme. But unlike then, he was the most expensive transfer in the world at some point.

Riquelme and Aimar aren't total flops though. Roman had generally a good time when at Villarreal, taking the team to the CL semis in 2006 (?) and only lost because Roman himself missed a penalty.

Aimar meanwhile won the Liga twice with an average Valencia side, as well as bringing his team to the CL final vs Bayern and also winning the UEFA Cup.

Not really a flop he is.

jani, Aimar IS a flop compared to all the hypes surrounding him, and obviously, his talent.....Saviola was rated highly too, but he certainly wasn't as talented as AImar and Riquelme....Aimar had the dribblings of Aerial Ortega and passing of Juan Veron at that time (00 - 03)

Riquelme isn't actually a failure as he was a success story for Villarreal, even being voted the best player in Spanish league 04 - 05, over ROnaldinho!

D'alessandro don't deserve this place..talented, but not amazing

the ultimate flops in my list, despite their undeniable talents are:
Ariel Ortega, Alvaro Recoba, Pablo Aimar

Riquelme had like 1,5 good years total in all this time he was in Europe while Aimar failed to have any really brilliant seasons at Valencia altough he had good moments. His overall impact wasn't very big and he never was the key player in their title wins.
