Serie A Report: Montella Stars In Five-Star Roma Display

Montella's rich vein of form continues (Allsport)
04/28/2002. Vincenzo Montella helped himself to a hat-trick as Roma kept their Scudetto hopes alive with a 5-0 thrashing of Chievo.

Marco Delvecchio had the first opportunity but he was denied by Cristiano Lupatelli in the Chievo goal.

Eugenio Corini almost gave the visitors a shock lead but his fine free-kick thudded against the bar of a relieved Francesco Antonioli.

Montella broke the deadlock after 25 minutes when he headed home from a corner for his 11th goal of the season.

The former Sampdoria forward netted his second nine minutes later when he headed another corner to the left of Lupatelli and into the net.

Five minutes into the second-half Gabriel Batistuta won his side a penalty after being fouled by Salvatore Lanna. This presented Montella with a chance to secure his hat-trick and the Italian international made no mistake, calmly slotting to the right of Lupatelli.

Shortly afterwards Batistuta's chip came of the bar and TV replays showed that Delvecchio's follow-up crossed the line but the goal wasn't given.

Emerson put his 4-0 up after 74 minutes when he ran through the heart of the Chievo defence and curled a fine effort past Lupatelli. Substitute Antonio Cassano made it five from close-range ten minutes before the end to round off a super afternoon for Fabio Capello's men.

Montella failed to score in the games that mattered the MOST this season, hey he scored 4 against Lazio in the derby but then he did NOTHING in the KILL or get KILLED games of the season: Inter and Milan at the San Siro....
