I agree the argument is stupid, but it is Batiogol's big ego which is causing the problem. Imagine, you are Montella, and you were pound for 16 million pounds last year, and given the sacred number 9 jersey. Now this older player, although he may be the best in the world, is threatening your job. Montella's worries about the #9 are an extension of his fear about his job.
