Final Score 1 x 0 in Favour of U de Chile in Santiago yesterday.

IMO...Not enough for the away game in Pachuca, Hidalgo ..... UNLESS the Owls can PUSH themselves to more than what they did last nite....The AWAY goals are very VALUABLE in these stages .....

Pachuca no pudo capitalizar la superioridad numérica y a pesar de que ganó 2-1 en el partido de vuelta a la U. de Chile, no fue suficiente para alcanzar el pasaporte a fase de grupos en la Libertadores.

Solano debut goal unable to prevent Universitario loss

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 12 (Reuters)

- Paraguayan champions Libertad netted a late winner in a 2-1 victory over Universitario in a Libertadores Cup tie on Wednesday, the win spoiling Peru captain Nolberto Solano’s goal-scoring debut for the visitors.

A surprise signing for the Peruvian club during the close season, Solano headed home in the 62nd minute after coming on as a halftime substitute to wipe out Manuel Maciel’s first-half opener for Libertad in Asuncion.

However, the former Newcastle United, Aston Villa and West Ham United player’s joy was short-lived when Juan Samudio struck an 83rd minute winner for Libertad, Paraguayan champions four times in a row, in the Group Eight game.

Striker Andres Silvera scored twice as Argentina’s San Lorenzo, semi-finalists last year, routed Mexican side San Luis 4-1 in the same group in Buenos Aires.

Silvera scored both his goals from headers in the first 20 minutes before Gonzalo Bergessio added another to give the hosts a 3-0 halftime lead.

San Luis defender Oscar Mascorro put through his own goal three minutes after the re-start and Victor Lojero notched a consolation for the visitors.

In another Argentina-Mexico clash, striker Jose Sand scored with the last kick of the game to earn Lanus a 1-1 draw at home to Guadalajara in Group Six.

Sergio Avila had given Guadalajara, Mexico’s most popular club, the lead in the 33rd minute.

Nine-man Cruzeiro held by strike-hit Deportivo Quito

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 25 (Reuters) -

Strike-plagued Ecuadorean champions Deportivo Quito snatched an injury-time equaliser to hold Cruzeiro to a 1-1 draw in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday after the Brazilians had two players sent off.

Universidad de Chile pulled off an extraordinary survival act as they drew 0-0 away to Brazil’s Gremio, who missed at least half a dozen clear-cut chances in Porto Alegre.

Venezuela’s Caracas FC completed a dramatic night with a shock 3-1 win over Argentina’s Lanus.

Deportivo Quito players last week went on strike over unpaid wages and bonuses less than two months after winning the Ecuadorean championship for the first time in 40 years.

The players resumed training on Monday for the Libertadores tie but warned they would go back on strike if they were not paid by Friday.

Ramires headed Cruzeiro ahead following a free kick in the 38th minute of the Group Five game in Quito.

The visitors had Wellington Paulista sent off four minutes later and were reduced to nine men when Fabricio followed midway through the second half.

Deportivo, who had Luis Checa dismissed in the 52nd minute, pressed forward and Bagner Caicedo headed their equaliser in injury-time.

Former champions Gremio dominated their Group Seven match but could not find a way past Universidad de Chile goalkeeper Miguel Pinto.

Pinto saved a Jonas header and Tcheco shot early on before Souza hit the post just before halftime.

Rafael Marques headed wide from a free position after the break before the game’s most astonishing sequence in which Gremio missed four chances in 15 seconds.

One header was cleared off the line, another shot was blocked, another effort hit the post and the rebound was smothered by Pinto.

Alex Mineiro had a shot cleared off the line after rounding Pinto and Gremio also had a penalty appeal turned down. The visitors had Marcelo Diaz sent off for a second bookable offence in the 72nd minute.

Caracas took control of their Group Six match against Lanus by scoring twice in the first five minutes of the second half through Jose Manuel Rey, from a rocketing free kick, and Dario Figueroa.

Rafael Castellin added a third before Jose Sand pulled one back for shell-shocked Lanus. The Venezuelans collected their first points in the group while Lanus have one. Both teams have played twice.

In the wee hrs of this AM Guadalajara beat Everton 6x2..Later on more details ..

Chivas' Magic Ends In 2-0 Loss At Caracas FC

Goal.com

Coming off two spectacular wins seemed to lead Chivas fans to believe that a third outstanding victory was possible against Caracas of Venezuela.

On Tuesday night, though, Chivas’ unbeaten record in the Copa Libertadores came to halt as Caracas beat Chivas 2-0.

The loss to Caracas dropped Chivas into the second spot in the Group 6 table.

Things stated out well for Chivas. Alberto Medina came up with a good shot in the 15th minute followed by another from Javier "Chicharo" Hernandez three minutes later.

Caracas showed that they too had good form and responded with a play of their own in the 24th that came terribly close to scoring. Two minutes later, Caracas had one of the best chances in the first half when a shot by Rafael Castellin forced Luis Michel to make a spectacular save. By the 35th minute it became more obvious that the Chivas defense was not up to par with the games of previous days. During the same minute Caracas once again came close to scoring.

Finally in the dying moments of the first half Caracas scored a goal that had long avoided them. A corner by Caracas eventually fell to Jaime Bustamante. A tussle in the area led to Michel to make a save first which eventually fell to Bustamante and then into the goal for the 1-0 lead to Caracas.

Coming right into the second half, Caracas once again had another shot. In the 47th minute, Guadalajara native Rodrigo Prieto had received a good pass from Dario Figueroa. Prieto’s one on one against Michel came to a stop when the Chivas goalkeeper stopped a sure goal.

Unfortunately for Chivas in the 50th minute Caracas doubled their lead. Dario Figueroa shot from a tight angle to beat Michel.

Few good shots came to Chivas during the game and it showed when Caracas once again dominated okay in the 86th minute. Again, a Caracas player came up alone against Michel who forced the ball into a corner. Despite the looming loss Chivas fought until the end.

In the 93rd minute Sergio "Gaucho" Avila scored a goal although offside had already been called.

In the end, the hosts worked harder than Chivas, and came away with a just result.

“Caracas jumped higher than us, they adapted better and in positioning the ball they were better,” coach Efrain Flores said after Chivas’ loss. “We needed more creativity to surpass the Caracas defense.”

Chivas will get a chance for revenge when Caracas visits on March 11 at the Jalisco Stadium.

San Luis Squander Late Lead, Settle For Draw

Goal.com

San Luis' Copa Libertadores hopes took a dent Wednesday as Universitario left Estadio Alfonso Lastras with a gutty 2-2 draw.

Jose Rodolfo Reyes and Michael Orozco scored on either side of halftime for San Luis but Gianfranco Labarthe's stoppage-time goal leveled terms.

Through four games, San Luis have jus two points and are three back of Universitario. Los Gladiadores are 10 points back of group leaders Libertado, who beat San Lorenzo 1-0 in Argentina on Wednesday.

Reyes opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Jairo Patino crossed the ball to Reyes who powered a header into the goal.

Universitario equalized later in the half. Nolberto Solano knocked a free kick into the heart of the penalty area. The ball bounced around before Peiro Alva pounced on it and slipped it across the goal line in the 40th minute.

San Luis reclaimed the lead in the 78th minute. Orange, Calif., native Orozco became the second American ever to score a goal in Copa Libertadores when he knocked in a header off a cross from Tressor Moreno off a free kick.

With a much-needed victory within reach, San Luis let the lead and two points slip through their fingers. Alva had a hand in the goal as he sent a ball into the penalty area at nobody in particular. San Luis defenders failed to clear the ball and it eventually landed before Labarthe, who squeezed in the goal from inside the six-yard box.

San Luis' hopes of reaching the knockout phase of Libertadores are now dim. Even if San Luis win out, the club would not necessarily overtake Universitario for the second spot in the group.
