Attacks on Women: A Tax on Men

by June Stephenson

The greatest US environmental offender is the federal government -- run by men.... Ninety-four percent of people arrested and sent to jail are men. Whether robbery, burglary, arson, white-collar crime, crime against children, crime against women, crime in government, crime against the environment, drug dealing, drunk driving, murder, treason or gang violence, crime is a masculine statement.

Ten years ago there were approximately 200,000 people in US prisons. Today there are approximately one million Americans behind bars. Incarcerated men outnumber women by a ratio of 94 to 6. Men dominate the ranks of individuals on parole or probation -- all 2.4 million of them.

Male criminals cost this country more than $61 billion each year in incarceration and judicial expenses. This figure does not include the cost of the billion-dollar savings-and-loan scandal, nor the costs of toxic-waste cleanup.

We cannot expect men to police their own or take responsibility for their contribution to violence: they are too much a part of it. So besides building more prisons and jailing more offenders, what is left? Nothing short of ensuring that men pay for male-perpetrated crime.

Half of US taxpayers are women and all of these women pay for male crime with their tax dollars. A $100 criminal justice system "user fee" could be added to men's IRS returns. Of course, there would be screaming and hollering about such a fee, but one might ask, is $100 a year too much to ask to help curtail crime?

The concept of one group paying more for services is not new. Insurance companies in many states charge young men aged 18 to 26 more for car insurance than other people, because males in this age group cause most of the car accidents.

If men recognize that crime is a male statement for which males must pay more than females, there is a possibility they might help to "clean up their act."

Adapted from Men are Not Cost-Effective: Male Crime in America by June Stephenson (Harper Perennial 1996).

So! What do you men do to earn your keep? Sure sounds to me like you are very expensive to maintain.

Is there any truth to the theory that men create most of the crime and other problems in the world, or are you just misunderstood?

ARe men more inherently violent and prone to crime than women?

This is why Wonder Woman and her fellow Amazonians live in an island free of men.

Man, what I would do to get a live feed from the beaches of Amazonia to my computer at work!

Just imagine what those figures would be if we didn't have sport! And yet, we gotta hear yous nag us to death when we rather stay home and watch the game rather than go shopping!?

Men aren't cost-effective?

Geez. What about women? They must be some of the most expensive creatures around. :D

Well then, do you think that men are inherently more violent than women? Is it genetic or environmental?

Is Amazonia where the hold the annual Lingerie Bowl?
No. That would be heaven, where all the Amozonians go when they learn to appreciate sport, and men referees.

Hardly.

Why would man be different than the other mammals? A little more sophisticated, perhaps - but not different.

It depends on the crime, Boid.
What do you mean? The only crime where women surpass men would be prostitution!

I thought I just did?!

I think the answer might be a little too simple for a woman to grasp. Or, you just aren't a big fan of how nature works.

Whihc isn't really a crime, is it? And even if it was, there are a lot more customers than service providers, in whihc case it would make such a statement false, wouldn't it.

Most are crimes of passion, which means there was a woman behind it.

Its only fair that you're only paying half in taxes. Imo the tax fee mentioned should be reversed and only applicable to women.

REd, as was expected, gets it. Everything we do (thus the nature reference) we do for, because of and as a result of, p*ssy!
