McAllister resigns as Sky Blues boss, 1/12/04

Gary McAllister has confirmed his resignation from the post of player-manager at Coventry City.

McAllister had asked to be temporarily released from his job last month to help support the recovery of his wife, who has been fighting illness, but has now decided to make the departure permanent.

"After much consideration and discussion with my family, I have reached the decision that it would be better to sever all ties with Coventry City at this time so the club can clearly focus on the future," McAllister told the club's official website.

"I would like to express my gratitude to the club, the players, the staff and all the fans for their support and wish Coventry City every success in the future."

The 39-year-old was handed a five-year deal by the Sky Blues on his appointment in April 2002 and steered the club away from the relegation zone last season.

Chairman Mike McGinnity praised McAllister for his work at Highfield Road during his period with the club saying: "I'm extremely sad that Gary has decided to leave.

"I and the rest of the board completely support his decision and would like to thank him for his hard work here, including identifying players which were not in his plans and helping lower the wage bill, which has helped the club ensure future stability.

"Gary is an extremely hard-working and honest individual who will be sorely missed by everyone at Coventry City.

"We wish him and his family the very best of luck for the future."

Eric Black, who has been in charge of first-team affairs at the club for the last month, will continue in his caretaker role.
