ALESSANDRO NESTA will sign for Manchester United this summer in a £30million deal.

And the Lazio captain's move to Old Trafford is the reason why the Italians will not sell former United star Jaap Stam.

Premiership promotion hopefuls Wolves are the second English club to be told in recent weeks that £10m-rated Stam is going nowhere.

A Lazio official informed the Molineux club the 29-year-old Dutch international would not be leaving.

They insist Stam stays because Alex Ferguson has already bagged his defensive team-mate.

Stam — also chased by Kevin Keegan's Manchester City — had insisted he did not want a return to England but would be prepared to go back to his native Holland.

United boss Ferguson travelled to the Italian capital last month to watch Nesta in the Rome derby.

But the 26-year-old Italy ace had a nightmare and was taken off at half-time in a 5-1 thrashing.

Yet Fergie still believes Nesta will add some strength to a rearguard which has been rocky this season.

Meanwhile, defender Mikael Silvestre believes United can cope without injured duo David Beckham and Roy Keane.

United are still dreaming of a European Cup and Premiership double, despite fears the midfield stars will miss the rest of the season — and possibly the World Cup.

French international Silvestre, 24, said: "We will keep our heads high.

"I can understand that missing the World Cup would be disappointing and hard for Beckham.

"He did not play brilliantly in France 98 and this was a good opportunity for him to show he can do better."

it may not be as rumorish as well expect.

even on the SBS (local soccer channel) it was reported, and was also reported in the australian paper....

So there may be some truth to it. The wage demand might be high but united have proved that for quality players they will give good money!

I dont think that ManU can pay him much more that LAzio.

Lazio is after introudiction of Salary cap. I believe, that no matter in what way they do this, some of the players will be "Excluded" , ie the back-bone of the team. Or they will be included, but then they'll find other way to pay them......

In Nesta case, he's one of the directors of the SS Lazio. There is Directors renumeration :D

The most likely scenario is Cannavaro going to Juve and Thuram to Manchester. I don't think Nesta will decide his future untill the end of the season. If Lazio make CL, he will stay IMO. If not, who knows what happens.

I wouldn't value what SBS says too much. They also said that Kewell was gonna sign with Inter and it never happened.
I'm confident that Nesta will stay with us.

To be fair, SBS doesn't usually indulge in rumours except when there's an Ozzie involved. I think everyone from Les to that retard Paul Wade wants to see another huge money move for an Australian after they tried to claim Vieri as Australian when he moved to Inter hence the Kewell to Inter or Barca ;) The only place which drummed up the Real Madrid and Milan interest in Viduka was in Australia too.

I think this transfer is a real possibility and I sure as hell don't see too many Premiership strikers getting a look-in with Nesta around. They'd see him lining up to mark them and probably drop to the ground crying. The question mark is over the exact sum, 30 million pounds I regard as probably much too low.

30 million pounds??

mmmm, i would consider the fact that over the last season Nesta has not been as good as he perhaps normally is.

30 million pounds may well be about right, defenders will never incur the same amount of money as attakers and midfielders will...

I have a feeling that the veron issue could have a major stake in the transfer, i cant see them playing at united together next seaosn. Either it will be a trade, or lazio will pick up veron and united will get someone else...

Today i read this rumour:

Nesta signs with Inter in £18.5M deal
tribalfootball.com - May 3, 2002

Lazio captain and Azzurri star Alessandro Nesta has signed with Inter Milan according to reports out of Italy today.
The deal which will take Nesta to Inter involves a player swap with Inter defender Marco Materazzi heading to Lazio together with £18.5 million.

Lazio will also have the choice of one of two Inter players: Croatian defender Dario Simic or Brazilian striker Adriano.

what you guys think...true or just another rumour?

Ciao,
Tommi

The case of those 2 players is nothing like the one involving Nesta.

Figo and Nedved was bought and later sold. Nesta have only played in Lazio and was born there, that's the difference.

Barcelona fans will not burn the directors house if they sell Figo, the Lazio fans will if they sell Nesta. another comparable little difference.
