I don't know if anyone watched this game, but I thought it was class that Leverkusen supporters were singing YNWA all throughout the second half. Is there a football fan in Europe who doesn't know the words? :D

In any case, hats off to the cheeky gits.

I can't help thinking we have THE ABILITY to play like Leverkusen if we want to. Dominating the midfield. There is no need to reply of pace so much. Just a few good one two, triangles and a good hardworking midfield. We have the ingredents, we have the workers. We have the same kind of players. I hope Liverpool should look at Leverkusen and plan from there for next season, it is too late for that now, we have to play with what we know.

Well, looking further, who in the Leverkusen team is actually a winger? Sure they have Ze Roberto, but he is a converted left back like Riise. Basturk looks more like Smicer at his best (rarely) then Giggs to me? Schneider? Winger? I dun think so. He looks like Murphy with better ball control. There is Ramelow who like Hamann sits in the centre and spreads balls and Ballack the all action type like Stevie G. They are destroying Man U without having wingers like Pires or Giggs, running down the flanks, just some clever PASS AND MOVE WILL DO. In fact the way they are playing, they are taking a leaf out of the old Liveprool books. Dominating midfield, pity about they backline, Nowotney is out. And they dun have players the class of Owen or Litmanen upfront. Its all in the midfield. Just as I was thinking, I remembered Bergkamp sent in a great ball to Rooster head to break the deadlock. Bergkamp, hardly much pace to his game. U do not have to run fast to be effective, players like Bergkamp thinks quicker then Owen running. I was reminded on those midseason matches when we tried so hard to break the deadlocks but we can't. Hard work can get us so far, we still need genius. (Unlike Man U, attack can only get them so far, too bad about their defence). Of cos we need everything, from hardwork, attack, defence and of cos genius. Very few teams become champions while lacking in one out of the above areas.

I dun believe Liverpool players are worse then those lot (Leverkusen and Arsenal) in general. They just showed what a team can do with superior tactical skills. Had we tried to play like those Germans, we would be 10 points clear by now (at least).

no offence, but bayer are a completely different side to liverpool. the two teams couldn't be more differnt. i've rarely seen liverpool playing at that sort of tempo against a top-level team. it was a very gutsy performance by the germans tonight and i don't think liverpool would have equalled their performance.

That's how small-time you get when you're a small, crap club that has no songs.
I'd attribute it to the fact that most Bayer supporters are somewhat bilingual, so they were polite enough to sing songs in English so Man U fans can understand them. On the other hand, I've never met a mancunian who was able to speak proper English, let alone a bilingual one.

What impressed me most about Bayer Leverkuson was their ability to keep possession even under severe pressure. With a lot of hard work, eagerness to get forward, and clever positional play, i.e. forming triangles all over the field, they comprehensively out played ManYoo. It really was great to see. Liverpool could do a lot worse than copy this particular German outfit...

Even Real Madrid; a team consisting of awesome individual talent don't play this kind of precise, one-touch football at such a high tempo. Maybe they're just a bit too lazy with all the natural talent they have in the likes of Zidane, Figo, Raul, etc. Personally, I think Bayer Leverkuson could well beat Real Madrid in the final should Bayer finish the job off in the second leg; let's hope so... :D

Hi everyone..

Beefy and Mindscape..

First of all.. I totally agree with Mindscape on his analysis.. He was spot on in every comparison.. Beefy, Mindscape didn't say Bayer are playing like Liverpool currently are.. he's saying we should actually be playing in THAT way.. the players they use are somewhat similar to ours.. and if they are doing it right.. why can't we?? Bayer play a very nice game.. although.. their defence (as much as it looks solid) is easily broken down.. did you see the number of times Owen (in the Liverpool game) and RVN made it past Nowotny and Lucio??!!

One small fact.. if Bayer get to the final.. they'd have played all 3 English teams (Arsenal, Liverpool and Man U) in the competition in addition to 3 out of the 4 Spanish teams (Barca, Deportivo and Real.. so actually the tough ones.. as Mallorca only came by for fun!!).. which is one hell of an acheivement!! especially for a team that has never won their domestic league!! (well it's most probable they will this year)..

Plus Hans Jorg Butt isn't half the players Dudek is.

The difference (sadly) between Arsenal and us (I know the season isn't over yet) is that unlike Arsenal, we do not have the "something" needed to stay top.

We have the team, we have the hardwork we have the defence. Our style of defending and breaking is great as long as we are in the chasing pack (like present).

Not too long ago, in the middle of the season, when we sent clear on the top, opposition coaches are taking notice of us and teams tend to play their best against us and can a soak and counter style work against teams playing with 8 men in defence?

Well Arsenal played against West Ham and Ispwich and a few other teams with 8 men in defence. They did not just sit back like we did, they attack and attack till they get the goal. And unlike us, Arsenal have the necessary creativity to break those troublesome mass defence down, Bergkamp is the key to all these. He can't last 90 mins nowadays but as long as he create a brilliant piece of skill, the defence will be breached.

In all honestly, I can't see our current lot doing this. Sure it is hardworking, sure it is able to dominate the match as much as Arsenal does (If the opposition sits back, why not?) but when it comes to the bit of superme creativity, we are found wanting.

O Leary found it to his disadvantage when he went top when Kewell is in bad shape and they have Batty and Johnson in midfield. Hardly the Bergkamp and Pires master class needed to break down defences alerted to their current position.

If we are going to get rid of Jari, I can't see any clear replacement in sight. The best is that we play like Leverkusen and seek the clear incisive passes to make up for the lack of creativity.

Getting to the top is one thing, staying there is another matter altogether.

Not strictly true, when you consider what we are really capable of we can be devastating. the games against Roma Newcastle and Leeds our passing was spot on the movement was excellent the whole package was top notch. Then you have games like Ipswich where they sat back and defended we put 6 past them. As one commentator said, Ipswich aren't playing badly but Liverpool look unstoppable.

The challenge is to turn the sporadic performances mentioned above and let them become the norm rather than the exception. It's not easy but we are more than capable of doing it.

U did not read the entire thread
Our matches against Ispwich were played as if we were Leverkusen. Dominating the midfield, one- twos, quick incisive passing.

read my last thread again, if we are clearly not going to have a creative playmaker, at least let us play like Leverkusen. (regulary of cos)

If Liverpool want to play like Lever they need to out their whole defence plus Danny Murphy, they are good stoppers but all hate the ball.
You need players who love the ball to play that way. When i watch Liverpool the defenders seem to be clueless at playing.

Will Houllier change your style?
IMO no chance whatsoever.

He has made his intentions clear and the Anfield faithful will have to live with it :(

Sacking him now would be your best bet ;)

What intentions would they be?

The ones where he said, the defense is where and how I want ti to be, now we need work on other areas.

Or

We need to develop our style, I want the players to express themselves when they have the ball.

How about

We will be bringing in new players in the summer. Where from there did you deduce that Houllier will not be changing style?

Houllier bought Heskey
I think he made his footballing philosophy quite clear with that move :(

Just face the facts some men like playing rubbish football :(

Howard Wilkinson,George Graham,Gerard Houl

He's been lucky to have two great players like Gerrard and Owen to come through :(

Anelka was great at the Arsenal do you know why ?

because of Bergkamps passing ;)

Litmanen is rotting on the bench :(

explains to me a lot about Houllier :(

Totally agree with you Jern Lizardhous.

Liverpool has all the ingredients and potential to make a supreme omelette, but the chef loves to make plain old cheese omelette.

Have to bring in a new chef if you want a tantalizing dish.;)

One play is not enough to prove anything. A good play depends on many aspects, special on the opposite team. Last night, Manu gave too much space, their players were out of position frequently, counter-attack is not good. They were nervous and lack of fighting spirit.

One of the most difference between Liv and Lev is we are playing safety first. After winning the ball, Liv never use medium passes with high risk. Last night, Lev outnumbered in midfield, accept risk in counter-attack. Not and Lucio are very strong in one-to-one and chasing the strikers, similiar to Campell or Rio Ferdinand's style. H & H are strong in face-to-ball circumstances. It's not suitable for us to do the same with Lev in last night.

Liv's style is straigh, fast and simple. We like counter-attack because of not only the speed of Owen, but also the advantages of the circumstance. Players are too fast now, they make the pitch looks narrow and crowd, but in counter-attack, a half of pitch is used by a few of players. Defenders are stronger but slower in sprinting than strikers. In counter-attack, defenders need to retreat quickly, so that they are easily out of position.

Last night, Lev played slowly outside, suddenly change their gear to forward the ball to Manu's box. I think it's not new. If center defenders mark the strikers closely (as Italian) and defensive midfielders cover for long range shooting, this tactic lost power. But Lev did it well, maybe because they have two stricky players to use the space between defending and midfield. Comparing Riise with Roberto is not suitable. Riise is fast and skillful but his style is push-and-run and he uses his right-foot not good enough. Roberto is a typical Brazilian. He has a confidence about himself, stands and keeps the ball, invites the opposite players come in. Bisturd is different, he uses his two foot well, run in the space and consistence. Smicer can dribble but he is lack of consistence.

The problems of Liv are they play the same style for any team and their ability to change their tactics in the match. When Fulham went to Liv, they used ten men after the ball. I've got angry because we were too careful. When we play weaker teams, I have not enought confidence that we will win easily. Sometimes, I think Liv want to keep the match in balance and safety, and then win it by the quality of our players or some explodes of talented players.

Obviously, Liv can not apply our style on the match. We just get out the dark section, we still have some average players. That's the reason, Hou lets some player gone and is going around on the market.

Thanks.
