An Egyptian financier has emerged as a major shareholder in Chelsea.
In a statement to the stock exchange the London club's parent company Chelsea Village said it had been notified that Dr Ashraf Marwan was now the owner of a 3.2 per cent stake.

The Guardian says the share buying is thought to have taken place in recent weeks after another mystery investor, Swan Management, sold some of its 26 per cent stake to the chairman, Ken Bates.

The remainder is thought to have been snapped up by off-shore trusts.

Dr Marwan is now one of the club's biggest known shareholders behind Bates. The ownership of around 20 million of the clubs 170m shares remains unaccounted for.
