Soccer / European Champions League

Mac. Haifa confused over Badir's ban

By Doron Bergerfreund

Following last season's debacle in which it was thrown out of European club competition, Maccabi Haifa wants to double-check the status of player Walid Badir and has asked UEFA for clarification on the number of games from which he is banned at the start of this season.

Badir was included in last season's Champions League second qualifying round game against FC Haka of Finland despite him having to serve a two-match ban after being sent off in a European match the previous season.

The player's inclusion led to Haifa being thrown out Europe club soccer despite beating the Finnish side and setting up a lucrative clash against Liverpool that was due to net the Haifa club large profits, great interest and the guarantee of at least two more games in Europe, even if it had lost to Liverpool.

The situation is still confusing Haifa, which has been notified that Badir is barred from playing in his club's first European match in the new season. Haifa, which enters the qualifying competition in the second round, believes that Badir will be available for the return leg against either Balschina of Belarus or Portadown of Northern Ireland.

Badir, who fears that he may, in fact, be barred from more than just the one game, has asked Haifa to double-check the situation. The player is concerned that he will be forced to sit out two matches, believing that he did not complete the first match ban out of the two and may have been punished again for playing in the match from which he was supposed to sit out.

Just to be sure, Badir said he would ask not to play in either of the two matches, regardless of his status; but Haifa's management is expected to make a decision on the matter once it has checked again with UEFA.

Poor guy, it was all down to that Gen. Manager who couldn't read the fax properly.

Eitherways Haifa should walkover any of its opponents in this round.
